300 build thread

I thought I might get started with this since I just got the first piece of the puzzle, or at least I hope so. Here's the new carburetor. There will be plenty of pictures along the way.

No. The numbers give me nothing. They did somewhat trace back to a different number that was a "renew kit" for an old carter 4 bbl. Not sure how ligit that is though. From everything I have looked at, it is a 390. It's only missing a few things. Ford kickdown and electric choke, that I can tell anyway.
Here's the picture of the other side. Forgot it last night.

There are a few things that I don't know what they are, or what they are for. We'll have to take a look at it Aaron.

i dont think you need a kickdown, i never ran one on my bronco or my brothers 250. if you dont like the shifting you can get an adjustable vac. modulator for the trans, or shift it manually if its lugging at WOT.

Well, the kickdown is only 10 bucks. I'd say it's probably worth it.

Whenever I get the money to order it. Had some more unexpected things come up that required a hefty amount of change! Dang it! I was starting to get ahead again. That's what I get for thinking positively

Got info back from Holley after a few emails back and forth. Ended up having to send some pictures so they could determine what carb it was. It's a 4160 465 cfm holley. They came on 64-67 ford 289 engines.

I sure by now you've heard that the late model exhaust manifolds are like headers. When you get them it's not necessary to get the pipes as well Walker makes a pipe setup that works just as good. The part number is WLK-45166. Just be sure to check the openings that bolt to the exhaust manifold since sometimes the manufacturers don't clear them all the way. They may need some grinding to open them up.

I am familiar with the fordsix.com forum. There are a few guys here though that have done the same basic build that I am doing, so I have been using those threads for the most part. Most of their info comes from that forum anyway. I didn't know about the walker pipes kit, though I did know about walker being a good place to get the y-pipe.

Have some EFI exhaust manifolds on the way. Getting them through a guy here on FTE. Should have them in the next couple weeks.

On another note, changed the oil today. Didn't have any luck finding the rotella-t 10w-30, so I just went to the valvoline conventional, and found some zddp additive. Started by putting a can of sea-foam in the truck, then drove it around for a while. Ran noticeably better, and quieter. Had my brother help me, so that he could start learning how to work on his own vehicles. Started tinkering around with the truck and found the air filter housing to be shaking pretty good. So I tightened the wing bolt on the top. When I pushed down on the assembly, I noticed the truck running differently. Took the air cleaner off, and found the carb to be shaking pretty well. THE SCREWS HOLDING THE CARB TO THE EGR WERE EXTREMELY LOOSE! Unfortunately they are extremely difficult to get to. After standing on my head, and doing some acrobatics under the hood, I managed to get them pretty tight. Needless to say, it is running quite a bit better. It was a successful day under the hood of the ol' ford!
