Not neccesarily..4 speeds were fairly common...it's the 460 that was NON existent in a 4x4...if it has a 460...it's not original....my 79 F-350 4x4 is a 4 speed truck...but has had a 460 swapped in...it came with a 351M or 400...(Not sure which one...don't have VIN handy..LOL)...Nice score..put up some pics so we can see it or have someone help you get some pics up!!

1979 F350 4WD: Two different 4 speed manual transmissions were available, New Process 435 & Warner T-18, but...

There were no F350 4WD's available with a 460 engine or with a manual transmission until 1983.

1979 F350 4WD: C6 Cruise-O-Matic only with either a 300 I-6, 351M 2V or 400 2V.

The TRANS code is listed on the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch.

A = New Process 435 / F = Warner T-18 / K = C6 Cruise-O-Matic.

The engine code is the 4th digit of the VIN. 1979 F350 4WD =

B = 300-I-6 / H = 351M 2V / S = 400 2V.

If your 1979 F350 4WD has a 460 w/a 4 speed, both were swapped in.

460: 1973/79 F100/350 2WD's only.

This post kind of contradicts itself in the first 2 lines...'79 F-350 4wd,2- 4 spds available...then F350 wasnt available with 460 OR 4spd until '83.I believe that OR should be an AND.

'79 F-350 4wd were DEFINITELY available with a 4 speed(NP435)behind a 351M or 400.I have one which is 100% factory,and Ive had a couple of others.

As to the original posters question...I dont have the numbers,but ANY '79 F350 4x4 is a fairly rare truck.Much less common than any 73-79 Reg Cab F-150/F-250 4x4.

Your's being a Super Cab...I would say its a little more rare than a 78-79 F250 4wd Crew Cab...and probably just as desirable.

Nice score!!

There in no contradiction of any kind.

As I clearly stated, there were two 4 speeds available (I even listed the types and the Warranty Plate TRANS codes), but...

You could not get a 460 engine with 4WD or w/a manual transmission until 1983.

Ergo: The two 4 speeds were used with the: 300 I-6, 351M & 400.

460: 1973/79 F100/350 2WD's only.

Could the frnt end been swapped in? May B the tag's off. No 1 can tell what's transpired over the years unless runnin all the prt #s. I think that's why so many try to get em "back to stock" (all mixed up prts. I'm only 1 guy but I say: "So what"). I forget the initial question, it's gone over a new page & is not available to me here...importance is : Whadda you have for an end goal? Wanna have a pristeen truck w/ a purple frame U can jack up to show your buddies? Wanna go wheeling? Wanna make some money haulin, towin, plowin? All's good 2 me.

This is where I think people are getting confused...79 F-350 4x4's did come with 4 speeds available....but only behind 300 I-6, 351M & 400...as Bill stated....Usually when people swap a 460 in to a truck...say one that originally had a 351M in it....they JUST swap the 460 in.....this can be done...and is all the time...I don't have the specifics on all that is needed...although I know quite a bit (My buddy put one in a 77 F-250 in place of a 400...but his truck was an Automatic)....What Bill is saying is 460 and 4 speed not available...but just because the 460 wasn't available...doesn't mean that the 4 speed wasn't either....hopefully this makes sense to most of you...Originality no...swapped in yes....LOL

Sorry number dummy, but this statement is incorrect unless you switch the "or" for "and" as 351coupe already stated. With "or" in there it means "No f350s were available with a manual trans.......and so on and we all know you don't mean that, so....just sayin'. End of grammar session.

"You could not get a 460 engine with 4WD or w/a manual transmission until 1983."

I came back and re-read this thread. The statement Bill was trying to make was that any Ford truck with a 460 had an automatic transmission until 1983, then the 460 had a manual transmission as an option. The 4x4 didn't have a 460 until 1983, as an engine option.

Since both these hold true, that means no F350 4x4 prior to 1983 had a 460. No 2wd F350 w/460 had a manual transmission prior to 1983.

Lol, some of you people on here are just too damn picky. Number Dummy was nice enough to supply all of the information, and everyone goes on and on about how 1-2 words could be possibly wrong....

Jeez, i sure don't see a lot of gratitude on here... just saying, show a little respect... we all make mistakes...
