Tank Switch Diagram
for heaven sakes, dont do what the past owners of my 68 f250 ranger camper special did. If something didnt work they tore it out. tank behind the seat... torn out, wind shiels wiper tank and pump... torn out. I will go look and tell you what it what, one sec... ok, with he handle pointing forward and the little pointy arrow pointing backwards, it is on the main under bed tank. there is a plaque on mine too. Draw a square. at the top left write aux. top right write off. and bottom left write main. that is what mine sayes, but the writing is looks upside down if you are standing by the door. so rotate it 180 deg from normal reading position. (like you are reading a book upside down) have I confused you yet?
Here this may help... I hope it answers what you were asking.

The tank behind the seat is the main tank, the tank under the bed is the aux. tank.
I got tired of not being able to switch tanks while driving (just couldn't get my arm down there and turn the valve with the door closed) and switched to a solenoid valve operated by a toggle on the dash:

Easy to install, even easier to operate.

Yes, the switch under the dash is just for selecting the appropriate sending unit for the gauge, and the actual tank selector valve is the mechanical floor-mounted valve. So switching tanks requires you to turn that floor valve, and flip the dash switch over so that you can read the fuel level for the appropriate tank.

I see that the link I provided two years ago is longer good, so here's another one, from Autozone:
Duralast/Universal 3 port fuel selector valve used with SW48 toggle switch (FSV4) | Fuel Tank Selector Valve | AutoZone.com
As you can see, the valve has two input ports (one for each tank) and one output to the fuel pump. With the power to the valve turned off, it routes the fuel from one tank to the fuel pump (I chose this to be the main tank behind the seat.) But flip the switch on the dash and it energizes the solenoid and it now routes the fuel from the other tank (aux.) to the fuel pump. You can choose whichever tank you like as your primary tank. Be sure to use a power source that's keyed to the ignition switch, otherwise if you shut the engine off with the switch to the solenoid in the on position, power will still be going to the solenoid to hold it open for no need. I don't believe there's a lot of draw, but it could drain your battery over time if you leave it parked for a while.
It says the switch comes with instructions so I suppose all that's covered in there...

1967/74 F100/350's have a manually operated fuel tank selector valve on the floor adjacent to the drivers side of the seat.
1967/72 only: To the left of the steering column, below the dash, mounted to a bracket is a toggle switch that only changes the dash fuel gauge from the in-cab tank to the auxillary tank..
The switch bezel is market L FUEL TANK R
-----------------------------------------
1973/74 F100/350: The switch is located in the heater control panel.
1975/79 F100/350's have a electric fuel tank selector valve and solenoid assy (D5TZ-9189-B), mounts on the frame rail.
The switch is located in the heater control panel, switches the gauges and the fuel tanks.
