As some of you may have read before, I am rebuilding the engine in my truck. Getting close these days if I could get off work at a half way normal hour I could get a lot more done....

My question is do I need to put break in oil in my engine for a while before putting in regualr oil? We always run break in oil for 100 hours in new or rebuilt engines that we build, but I have never heard anybody on here talk about it. What do you guys run on a new engine? I know the factory breaks in the engines when they are brand new so we dont have to worry about that, but in my case its going to be up to me to do it.

I have in the last 30 years used the normal oil to break in.I do however change oil & filter at about 1000 miles

 

Ford was using Motorcraft 10w30 diesel oil in our engines at the factory. I even ordered it through the dealership until i got to 50K miles then went to 15w40.

 

By normal oil you mean 15w-40 and just run it 1000 miles?

 

Just run something like Delo 400 for the first few oil changes.

On my engine, I put in Delo and drove it about 50 miles and then changed the oil. This is due to so many particles and debris from machining that never get cleaned out. Then I went 500 miles and changed it, then 1500 and changed again. After that, went to normal intervals..

 

You should run something with a high zinc additive in it......IIRC Rotella has the highest level. But again I could be wrong...Im not a diesel tech. Im a parts jockey. Someone will be in shortly to help ya out.

 

We have a break in oil that we run in our engines, they are off road diesels, dont know how much differance that makes other than they get subject to a lot more abuse (dust, long idle times, a lot of lugging). Im just extra cautious on this one since Im footing the bill. Plus Im not used to HEUI system as oil doest have much play on our injectors in Deere engines.

 

Are you doing the rebuild your self just curious? What kind off cost is involved. I think I would use 10w 30 diesel oil for the initial break in. Tolerances are tight so quick lubrication is critical. A thinner oil will serve the purpose. 50 or 100 miles change it an then maybe after 500 more miles change it again. Then you should be set to go normal intervals. I use Archer oil. Its an aircraft grade oil that is very high quality. Its not advertised much but its excellent lubrication. How many miles on the original motor? Sorry for all the questions. Just very curious. Good Luck

 

Just run the 15w-40 in it. If you want to add some zinc to it then they have additives for break in that you can put in there to get more zinc in there. Don't start the engine until your ready to drive it either. You don't want it to sit at idle for very long during the initial break in. You want to go drive it on the first start if you can and drive on backroads where your speeding up and slowing down. Get into it a little(not WOT, just about half throttle) to put more pressure against the rings to seat them and repeat it a few times. don't do any freeway driving where your staying at one certain RPM for extended periods. You want the engine to see all RPM ranges during break in. Once you have driven it about 25-50 miles, change the oil. At this point the rings should be seated so just do another oil change around 500 miles and 1000 miles like said above.

 

No problem on all the questions. I am building it myself. I have about $520 in machine work (heads gone through, block bored to .040, sleeve in #5 cylinder, polished crank, mic'd cam, and I think he drilled out some broken bolts), $1780 in overhaul parts, $1095 for 8 injectors, $550 for PHP Pheonix chip, $100 for a new used turbo.......... Im sure there are a bunch of little expenses like paint, sealants, whatnot.

I bought the truck with 236,000 miles on it, everything appears to be orriginal, the air box was broke so they dusted the engine.

Welllllll......... now that you say that you are possibly correct. I know when I had the 6.4 that is what they said, but you know how that goes........

However, I am ready to have this one running, forget the 6.4 and dealing with our ignorant stealership. This engine is gonna make me wish Id done this a long time ago I hope
