2004 F250 automatic transmission problems
I am having tranmission problems with my 2004 F250. It has the 5.4 engine with the 4 spd auto trans with 80k miles on it. I had no previous transmission problems untill today. I was at my fathers house today and went to back the truck out of his driveway and it had no reverse. It was like I put it in nuetral. His driveway is pitched so I let it roll backwards out of the driveway. It went fine in drive. About halfway home, 6 miles, the overdive light started blinking and the truck started to shift hard. When I got home I tried putting the truck in reverse and it worked. I let the truck cool down and started it again. Now I dont have reverse and the overdrive light is not blinking. Any ideas?
I plan on taking it to the dealer tomorrow to have the codes read.

Well the only code was for a rough shift. The mechanic at the dealer told me that electrically everything works so its an internal problem, which means the trans has to come apart. He said that since the ATF fluid is clean and not burnt he thinks its probably a bad seal somewhere inside the trans. I called around to get some quotes on getting it rebuilt. Prices ranged from $1200 to $2400. One mechanic asked if I tried a can of seafoam. He said maybe a valve was stuck not allowing it to build pressure when put in reverse. I figure at this point a $12 can of seafoam cant hurt. I will try that tonight. If it doesnt work out comes the trans.
This sucks, I have two payments left on the truck, owned it since new. It could have at least waited untill I was done paying on it.

Ok the seafoam didn't seem to do anything. I found that if I put it in drive and go forward a few feet and quickly put it in reverse, reverse grabs for a shot period and then slips. I decided to drop the pan and chage the fluid and filter. The fluid in the pan was not dirty. The magnet in the pan has some material on it but not alot. When I diconnected the line from the trans fluid cooler and ran the engine the fluid from there was fairly dirty. I filled it back up and called it a night. I will drive it tomorrow and see what happens.

ROUGH SHIFT?
HEY CJ,
DO YOU REMBER THE DTC CODE NUMBER FOR THE "ROUGH SHIFT"?
THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT CAN CAUSE YOUR PROBLEM AND THEY ALL DONT MEAN THE TRANS MUST COME OUT. FOR THE DEALER TO TELL YOU THAT ALL IS WELL ON THE ELETRONICS SIDE BUT YET THERE IS A DTC MAKES ME WONDER..... IF YOU COULD REMBER THE NUMBER OF THE DTC MAYBE I COULD STEER YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION BUT WITH OUT IT THE POSSABILITIES ARE ENDLESS..

The ATF was fairly clean from the pan and dirty from the cooler. I dont know the code that was pulled. I will see if I can get it scanned again and write down the DTCs.
It didnt want to shift from 3rd gear this morning. I had the truck up to 55 mph and it would not upshift untill I completely let off of the gas. It then shifted hard and the OD light started blinking. When I got to work I was able to use reverse due to the increase line pressure. I shut the truck off, then restarted it and reverse did not work again since the pressure in the trans dropped to normal.

I know that there are but the way that he described what the dealer told him made me wonder if they were just to busy to go in depth with him.
could be a lot of things like TR sensor, low line pressure, valves, something in the main valve body, DCA valve stuck, etc. to me it just sounded like they were short with him.

Well I had the trans pulled by a local transmission shop. They had to replace the rear planet gears, solenoid block, torque converter, pump, and installed a rebuild kit. $2250 later I have reverse again.
