Yes it's a roller motor and it was factory rated at 200hp/310tq. Best upgrades are a complete exhaust system including headers and a cam change(5.0HO cam with 1.7 roller rockers), ignition upgrade and a timing bump.

thanks it already has headers and full exhaust, my brother bought it yesterday and we dont know what it has done to the motor but he said it will spin the 33s into 3rd w/ a 5 spd so im thinking it may have gears due to the idle is very smooth and sounds like a stock motor. what parts of the ignition would you change? i told him to do a tune up so that would be the time to upgrade stuff.

Conanski, what kind of power change, mileage change and torque peak rpm change could be expected by the cam change from the stock 5.8L cam to 5.0 HO alone? (for an engine with long tube headers and dual exhaust).

Because of the restrictive heads the 5.8 can use a lot more cam than Ford supplies and as a result you'll see both HP and TQ increases across the board with a HO cam and 1.7 rockers. DesktopdDyno says HP peak goes from 221@3500 to 258@4000 and TQ increases from 347 to 381.. both at 2000rpm.

Thanks for that info Conanski.

Any idea of what would happen to gas mileage?

More TQ will improve milage.. but only when you're not utilizing the new found horsepower.

Sounds like a win-win situation for me, since I have the 1.7 Cobra roller rocker arms and a HO camshaft lying around. And I am concerned about mileage.

I actually happened to check the camshaft for straightness by putting it between centers on the lathe at work. Surprisingly, it was about .050" out! It took a huge amount of force with a machinist's jack under the center journal to straighten, and the boss was a big pain as well when he caught me messing around (even though it was a Friday afternoon).

I'd never checked a camshaft for straightness before, but I imagine a bent one, if it could even be installed, would wipe out the bearings pretty quickly.

My ebay rocker arms also had several cracked pedestals and several of different heights. Luckily sets of new ones (16) could be ordered cheaply a couple years ago.

The moral- check everything, particularly with used parts.

Hey all, does anyone know the power gains for just doing a cat back exhaust like a flowmaster 3 chamber? Is it worth doing?

only if you want it to sound good. on a stock motor a cat back does very little, but CAN sound great

As stated a catback alone isn't worth much since the major cork in the exhaust system is the factory cats themselves.
