96 ranger......fuel gauge doesn't work....where to start?

It is probably the sender unit in the tank. If you can disconnect the connector on top of the tank you can test both the gauge on the dash and the sender in the tank. The yellow with white stripe wire is the feed from the sender black with yellow strip is the ground connection. Use an ohm meter and connect between the b/y y/w pins on the sender you should have a reading of between 22 ohms and 145 ohms depending on fuel level. 145 ohms is full. It will probably read way out of that range. Either zero of infinity. If this is case you will have to replace the sender If the values are right then you need to test the gauge a 60- 70 ohm resistor between the y/w and b/y wire should have the gauge reading half scale If it doesn't do anything then you have to start looking for problems backup the line towards the gauge itself. It is fed from fuse 11 from the cab fuse box but so are the other gauges and I assume they are working. Good luck

if your truck has been in maine it whole life i can just about gurantee you need new hangers and shackles on your rear leaf spings.........it might be easier to removee the bed to get the fuel tank and then change the shckles while it is off

I can just about guarantee your right and it needs about 6" of frame rail on the drivers side so I can bolt on a new hanger!! The spring eyelet is resting up against a 2x4 so it doesn't wear thru the bed floor and I gotta ratchet strap holding up the bumper, LOL.
Right now I wanna get any possible electrical, gauge, dummy light, and ABS issue squared away, as I'm slowly collecting goodies to drop a 5.0 in, and once the front end "drop" or sag is established, I'm dropping the rear with a flip and DJM shackles, and new OE hangers.
I'm using a complete 95 f-150 MAF 5.0 with E4OD(?) and although the wiring looks fairly easy, I wanna be sure!!
