To be absolutely sure-check the VIN sticker on the driver's side B pillar. It is visible when the driver's door is open. There will be a one letter code under the category of "Trans".

This is absolute-only if the transmission is still the same factory tranmission and hasnt been changed.

NP435
will have an aluminum top cover

T18-T19

T18 had an un-synchronized 1st
meaning u can really downshift from 2nd into first without a little grinding noise

T19 all forward gears were synchronized
meaning u can easily down shift into first

The NP435 had an aluminum top cover and a PTO cover on the passenger side
The T18 had a cast iron top cover with a PTO cover on the passenger side
The T19 had a cast top cover with a PTO cover on both sides.
There was at least 2 different OD trans as well. One, reverse was up and to the left, the other has the typical "H" pattern with reverse down and to the right

i know it was T-18 for gas engines and T-19 for diesels, but i believe you could still get the NP 435 in 87as an option.
