I had a knocking in my motor and when we got into it it was a push rod. I have ordered a new set. My question is should I, or do I have to replace the rocker arms too or can I just replace the rods and be back up and running?

 

kinda depends on what the damage was with the push rod

 

is the push rod bent, or damaged? could be rocker arm was loose, and push rod just came out. could also be that your lifter is warn, and has a hole in the bottom, and no longer pumps up. could be that you "floated" the push rod by over reving the engine. I would roll the push rod on a flat piece of glass, and see if it's bent. then look at the rocker arm, and make sure that it's not damaged where the push rod sits in it. if all looks good, put it back together, or replace just the bad parts, then put it back together. in a short amount of time, you will know if you have to repair deeper, as it will come right back apart. if it don't come back apart, use your saveings to go out to dinner

 

We knew it was on the #2 Cyl. When we pulled the rockers off they did not seem to be loose, but we could spin the rods freely. when we pulled them out you could see where they were bowed a bit when you rolled them across the table and where they were rubbing because it was the only clean spot on them. I just did have they extra money to get the rods. I was wanting to replace the rockers too and now maybe even the lifters.

 

Before you do ANYTHING, you ought to wait and talk with Charlie at the GTG on Sunday!

looks good so far, you have new push rods already right? the pic I need you to take is of the bottom of the rocker arm where the push rod sits. take of more than 1 rocker arm. thanks

yup. they're done. replace ALL of them, problem solved, motor good for another 100,000 miles btw, the reason it's so crunchy inside, no one changed the oil very often. start using castrol 10w40, and a motorcraft filter every3,500 miles, and by the time your ready for your rebuild, it will be clean inside. DO NOT PUT ANY CLEANING SOLUTION IN YOUR MOTOR> IT WILL ILL IT. let the oil clean it over time. there is no magic cure to pour into the motor.

well now I have had good results from one quart of trans fluid in the motor run it for around 100 miles no more then change it
just from my experience-others say it does nothing
using a good high detergent oil and changing it around 3000 to 3500 like
Charlie said is a good plan
NEVER ever use the motor quick flush or any of the other stuff-it KILLS motors
