Oil Capacity in 5.4l
>My mother has a 98 Expedition with the 4.6 and the oil filter is not remote but it is still a half quart low. My 97 5.4 4X4 truck's oil filter is behind the front bumper and it is a half quart low after the six quarts are poured in. We just leave them at six quarts. Are the expeditions you are referring to 4X4? I was thinking that the remote oil filter behind the bumper was for easier access on the 4X4 models since they have the front axle just below, where the oil filter would go.

Since my first posting, I talked to the service manager at the Ford dealer. He read from the shop manual that the '99 Expy's take 6.5 quarts when changing the filter. (Why would you NOT change the filter!?). They've moved the filter on the '99's. It comes right off the block. I've also sent an email to the Ford engineers via http://www.ownerconnection.com/home and got the response that 6 quarts is what the engine holds. Kinda conflicts with the dealer except the dealer couldn't have been more responsive to my problem. (Yes, I'm talking about a Ford dealer!) At any rate, so long as I don't start leaking, I going to use 6.5 quarts on a change.

re: oil filter on the block on the 99s
My 99 4x4 5.4L oil filter is still remote, behind the bumper. (And I applaud Ford for this - sure beats dripping oil down the axle, frame, tie rods, and every where else!!!) I've not noticed the dipstick indicating 1/2 qt low, but then I've not looked that close, either..... guess I will tonight!

I also have a 98 Expedition with the 5.4 and remote mounted filter. The remote mount is part of the towing package, since the package includes an oil cooler. This is why some people are reporting filters on the block (non class III towing pkg) and remote mounted (class III pkg)When I had my oil changed at the dealer they charged me for 7 quarts and my dipstick read full, when I change it myself I putin the 6 quarts and it reads a 1/2 quart low. So either the dipstick is not reading properly or the engine really requires 6 and 1/2 quarts.???????Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.

Oil Capacity in 5.4l
I hve 98 5.4 expy w tow package and remote filter. It definitely takes 6 1/2 qt to get to max line and 6 qts puts right between min and max. The manual says to not top off if falls in middle probaby because dumb dealers always put in 7 qt and overfill. Sounds like good advice to me.

***5.4 with Tow Package/ Always change with six Quarts!( manual-Engine Capacity)/ better a little less than too much!!!!
What's the big deal about a half a quart-get real!your engine can probably run on 3 quarts!!! Don't risk overfill!! it can cause far worse damage in the long run!!

My '97 with the towing package also takes 7 quarts with a filter change, and it doesn't indicate overfilled on the dipstick. Make sure to run your Expy and circulate the oil before checking the level as it will lower the level some when it fills the filter and lines.
