1996 powerstroke common problems

Hey im looking at getting a 1996 f250 single cab 7.3psd with 186,000 miles on it. he wants 3300 for it. i was wondering whats the common problems with this motor are, and if its reliable and quick at the same time. is there any turbo lag, for work i drive an 08 f350 and the turbo lag on that is crazy bad, but once it gets spooled its quick. just wondering what you guys think of it? Thanks

Tips - Idea - Hints

Steve has great tips on picking out a truck.

I'd be sure to give it a look over in person and drive it before purchasing, but only wanting 3300 so he can get a new truck seems low.

Make sure to check the front for how he did the lift.
Make sure he dropped the hangers for the TTB, that is important.

mine is a 96' also. The guy I bought mine from was having to use ether to start it up. I bought it anyway. It got to the point where it wouldn't start up. I replaced the glow plugs thinking it was them. It still wouldn't start. I almost gave up on it then someone told me to check the HPOP res. It was bone dry. I filled it up and she's fired up ever since- no ether. I guess I got a new set of glow plugs out of it.

When it fires up see how much the smoke clears up after about 10 min. If it still has a lot of smoke in injector o-rings might be going- might be the rings though. Either my injector orings are going or my rings are, but I don't mind that much cause my truck runs strong. As far as turbo lag, I don't think the older 7.3s have this prob, but I'm not real sure about that- hopefully someone else will chime in. My turbo seems to be good all the way through the powerband and its stock.

I have a 96 f350 the only problem I have had so far was a CPS. Easy fix even in the cold.

OK I guess I am a dummy just where is the HPOP resivoir? I have a 96 7.3 also and didn't know there was such a thing but my truck does not want to start real good and was wondering if this could be the problem.

in front of the motor, in middle, on top. It's got a sensor on the pass. side and a small plug on the drivers side, both on top. About 8 inches wide, couple inches deep.

What do you put in the HPOP reservoir if it is low? Just curious, as I knew nothing of this.

Whatever oil you're using in the engine. That's what circulates through the HPOP.
