Hey all, I'm picking up a neat little stepside single cab 1977 f150 4x4 tonight.

It's an original smog exempt az car, and it's now in cali. I'll have to register it in this state, and I assume smog the truck since 1976 and newer have to be smogged.

I'm not finding a ton of info out there on oem smog equipment.

what all did this truck come with? I don't think they came with cats yet right? What about egr, smog pump, etc? Thanks all!

 

well I pulled up the VIN for this truck, and it's a 351 truck.

Best info I can find is from rebop emissions stickers...seems the 351 trucks came with catyltic converters, and 400 trucks did not. Since either engine was an option, I'm thinking i'll purchase a 400 emissions sticker and afix it to the valve cover under the hood. That should allow me to get away with a smog check and no cats....

 

I have had two 77 F150 short boxes both 4x4s and one was a 351 and one was a 400 and nether one had a cat or smog pump. The one with the 351 was leased new from a dealer in Denver, I was the second owner and it had 23,000 miles on it when I bought it from the same dealer, so I know it was not tampered with. I got it in 79. If yours was sent to Calif and sent to a dealer in Az, who knows what it may have had in it. Who knows if the spedo and cluster is still the original but does it say unleaded fuel only on it?

 

Try doing a search... sorry just had to say that, I am one of the users who read the threads and search all the time then get told to do a search. I started a thread on this a few days back and got a lot of good replies. Here is what I have learned.

The 1977 with the 351 as far as I can find out through a lot of research did not come with cats or a smog pump outside of California. Originally I thought it did but then I found out that it was slightly over 6,000 pounds which is the difference (at least in Colorado) between smog and non-smog. It did however come with EGR and PCV and by the looks of the battery box a vacuum storage canister. I am still not sure about the charcoal canister that stores and recirculates gas fumes from the tanks back into the system.

In CA you may have to have the smog pump, EGR, PCV, and the fuel vapor recirculation. As for the cats I do not know but the reading and searching I have done indicate that things in CA were always a couple of years ahead of things everywhere else in the emissions department, so you may need cats. As you mentioned this may be different with the 400.

What I can't find is where to plug the smog lines into the heads or the exhaust. I bought my F-150 a few weeks ago with dual exhaust so if the smog pump can't be plumbed into the heads I might not run it to the exhaust. I have seen them with two lines running into the back of each head from the pump, running into 4 holes in each head, and running to the exhaust directly.

Chilton's has a good diagram of the EGR and PCV systems but I forget about the vapor recirculation system.

My goal is to try to add all of this stuff regardless just so I can learn about it for future projects. Besides, any chance to go to the pick and pull is reason enough for me to look for this stuff. I can always take it off later and put it on something else or throw it on the garage floor like my dad did.

 

My 77 4x shorty, has 351Measly and NP435/NP205 the Emissions sticker on the Valve cover says NON-Catalyst, it has no cat, no smog pump, only an EGR valve and the associated crap that goes with it,,,, so,,,,, from my experience,, find the NON-catalyst sticker, if it has an EGR valve,,,, run vacuum lines all over, but hook them to each other,,, every 2 yrs I have had to smog it,,, and this year, I put the EGR back on, but basically plumbed everything to itself,,, it looks mighty impressive with the vac lines goin to and fro,, but in reality they don't do jack,,, and it runs CLEANER on the sniffer!! It passes the visual cause it is all there, and they AIN'T gonna trace em out,,, Good luck
