I've often wondered the purpose of the "air chambers" incorporated into the air intake on a 2008 Ford Expedition. Surely they serve some purpose ....................... but what??????

Noise. The air chambers act as mufflers to help reduce incoming noise through the air intake. Most people do not want to hear all the cool and throaty noises the engine can make as it sucks air in. Go ahead and yank the biggest culprit... the air intake silencer. It's attached to the lower airbox and sticks out into the D/S fenderwell. It's a small plastic "horn" that necks down to about half the original opening in the airbox. This "horn" is the only input into the closed airbox. It takes about 20 minutes to remove and without it your engine breathes more freely and has a nice little intake growl to it....
