What would you buy? 6.0l vs 6.4l

Hello all

I am trying to get some info for my uncle, He is wanting to buy a superduty, crew cab 4x4. He says he wants to buy a 08-09 6.4l. But I'm not sure, I heard about so many problems with the engines that I am wary. And I think a 6.0l would be a better idea.

I would really like to hear from people who have dealt with these engines and what you would you buy ?

Try posting in BOTH 6.4 and 6.0 forums. You should get lots of info there..

An '06 or '07 with the 6.0, or an '09 or '10 with the 6.4. Notice I am skipping the earliest version of each. With that in mind, it would come down to price versus mileage. The '09-'10 has some nice creature comfort improvements, but the disadvantage of rather poor mileage, and of course will cost more.

You can go wrong with either one, but they can be great trucks if you find the right one.

i think you have your info backwards in regards to the 6.4 vs. 6.0

the 6.0 is the more prone to trouble engine not the 6.4. least not when you compare the entire life of each engines production run.

plus the 6.4 equipped truck has tons of upgrades all over that make it the better truck to get.

If my plans were to leave it stock, I would purchase a late 06 or 07 low mileage 6.0L. Ask most Ford diesel techs, they hate the 6.4L. If you are going to delete the emissions crap and tune, then go with a 6.4L.

OK, as far as I know this truck will be left nearly stock, so DPFs and other emissions parts will stay on it.

And my knowledge of these engines is minimal, and my bad perception of the 6.4 is only based on pre sale trucks( my neighbor is an engineer at the superduty plant, and they drive every new truck 50ish miles because so many were braking drown at the dealers)

So I have/had no idea how they did after passing the test.

I have 95K on my 2003 F-350 dually crew cab 6.0L and have not had a single problem with it (not to mention that the 19MPG that I am getting out of a 4WD is nice too!). As long as you guys take care of it, the 6.0L is a very nice motor! 6.4Ls get less mileage than the 6.0L too.

Tough Decision

I have owned two 6.0's, one 6.4, one v-10 and one 5.4. I like the v-10 best overall because it has 160K miles without a single issue. I have never towed with it because it is an F350 dually, chassie cab with a small box and liftgate. I usually have it loaded with between 3K-6Klbs of dry ice and its runs excellent. I only get between 9-10mpg regardless of loaded or unloaded but it has a lot of drag and is a dually. I liked both of my 6.0's and had no engine problems on either with almost 300K combined miles. They got better mpg than the 6.4 or v-10. They did not like cold weather at all. I took them to Colorado and Pennsylvania and even in Houston winters needed to warm up for awhile. My 2008 F350 6.4 diesel is currently for sale and i'm looking to buy a new 6.2 gas F350. I will gladly sell him mine. My 6.4 has been good except for the poor mpg. 9-14

If you under warranty, want to mod and like the idea of big power with a tuner and not much else then get a 6.4. If you don't like the idea of something small taking out a $10k motor, high repair out of warranty (higher than the 6.0) and the higer initial purchase price then get a 6.0. The 6.0 has been for the most part figured out. Doing the right things like changing the filters both fuel and oil, adding a coolant filter and deleting the egr and adding studs will give you dang near a bullet proof truck. Added to that the 6.0 can get better mpgs then the 6.4 in most cases and still have plenty of power for what ever you want to do.

If those were my only choices, I'd go with the 6.0. Depending on driving habits, towing, terrain, miles per year, and a whole list of other factors, a gas motor might be a better fit. He could also wait and see if the new 6.7 diesel is a homerun like Ford hopes it is.

I have the 6.4. Runs great, but this motor requires a little more maintance and you have to run it hard.

city driving, lots of idling is not recommened. I pull loads all the way up to my gvwr and no problems.
