why is my 1986 ford f150 backfiring?

why is my 1986 ford f150 backfiring?

My 1986 ford with 5.8 v8 windsor makes a backfiring noise when i rev up the engine and let off the gas. also when i drive down the road and accelerate fast and let of the gas sometimes it shoots like a gun. what can i check out that might be replace or adjusted. carb or some damn vaccum?

It's running rich. Too much fuel is entering the exhaust system and is lighting off in the system causing the noise.

Check for exhaust leaks, any air entering the exhaust will help ignite any extra fuel. Check float level, power valve, idle mixture, etc. Check timing.
