Ranchero Rag Joint PN ???

Can anyone here let me know what the PN is for a 1972 Ranchero rag joint. I'd like to find the part, not the repair kit but anything is better than nothing.

It a 500. 302 2V with manual 3.06 Toploader. No PS.

Thanks.

Welcome to FTE

The rag joint (aka steering coupler) was not sold by itself, it was only available with the flexible lower steering shaft and coupler assembly.

The only available part was the splined metal coupling that fits between the steering shaft/coupler and the input shaft of the steering gearbox.

Thanks! I saw those five at that dealer when I visited my local dealer to see what they could come up with.

As you correctly noted, there's the shaft assy and then there's the 3A525A coupler.

The slop in my steering isn't a safety hazard NOW but I'd like to address the approx. 2" free play in the wheel.

Does anyone know if I can just buy the 3A525A coupler?

I bought one of those HELP! repair kits that looks like a leather disc with some bolts. Anyone use these kits with any success?

I don't have PS. Is there any adjustment on the steering box I can make?

Open your peepers and look at post #2 again.

I found and listed sources that have 261 of the D3OZ3A525A couplers.

Rag Joint unavailable apparently

I need a D4OZ3B676A also, (1973 PS 351C GT Ranchero) called around and Green found the "last one in existance",...but when they got a look at the part the reason it was still around was apparent,./..the rag joint itself has disintegrated.
I tried getting one of the 16$ repair kits but the hardware was not the right size and the holes in the rag joint itself were too small. I may still try to use the rag portion and punch out the holes to the right size. The attaching hardware is a problem though,...Looks like I may try my local machine shop and have them turn down a rod to the right size and configuration then thread the other ends in order to make the 'posts" and attaching area,...I guess the posts are the safety back up should the Rag portion fail.

The 3A525A part listed above is apparently not the rag joint but rather the metal portion that goes between the joint and the steering box (as per Green's discussion on the phone today), Green postulates that the reason the 525's are still around is that it's metal and doesn't fail or degrade like the rag assembly,...hence they are still out there. Does anyone have a schematic that shows the 525 part just to nake sure?

Anyone else come up with a solution?

look up russ milne ford, chesterfield, mi. 586-948-7700 I can't remember the guy's name in parts dept. but he looked them all up in the Ford system and quoted me around $60 for one (last year). I'm sure if you pay shipping up front, they'll do it, if they have any left. the guy was pretty nice. unusual for a big dealer. good luck

$60.00? The last dealer net cost was $127.86, last MSRP was $213.10.
All US FoMoCo Dealers have access the in-house FoMoCo Dealer Parts Locator System. I also have access, and to the website the obsolete parts vendors, and some FoMoCo dealers are using.

D4OZ3B676A .. Steering Shaft & Coupler Assy / Obsolete

ANTIQUE AUTO SUPPLY in Arlington TX has ONE = 817-275-2381.

As of 1/17/2011 @ 3:46 AM PST = No FoMoCo Dealer, no other obsolete parts vendor has any.

When I post part numbers for obsolete parts here on FTE that I locate, it doesn't take too long, for many (if not all) to be sold.

6/11/2010 = There were 16 of these puppies available. Today, there is ONE. Obsolete parts are hard to find. If you snooze, you lose.
