Smile Crown Vic Track width question

I have read alot about using the front clip out of a Crown Vic in my 56 f100 but can not find a straight answer to my most important question.

What is the the track width from the front of the hub to front of the other side hub? (Ie where the back of the rim would mount)

Hopefully someone can give me a direct answer on this one I have been searching for hours and not sure if measurements others have given are from the same point I am measuring or not.

Thank you very much for your help.

In order for you to get the answer you're looking for, you need to ask the correct question. The "track width" is the measurement from the center of the tire to the center of the opposite tire. That may be quite different from the "hub-to-hub" measurement you said you truly are looking for.

This might help you to get the straight answer you're looking for. You can't ask for the track width and expect to get the hub-to hub number. And it may not be an officially published number, either. You probably need to visit a wrecking yard yourself personally, or find someone who just happens to have a late model crown vic that's willing to jack up the front of their car, pull off their front wheels, and take that measurement for you.

Thank you for your help that explains all the different numbers.

Is anyone here able to give me the number I need because the wrecking yard is very far away.

I need the hub to hub measurement because the track width would change depending on what rims and tires were used on the measured car.

Thank you

Go out to your truck and measure 16 inches out from the outer edge of the frame...this is where the wheel mounting flange on the disc brake rotor will be using a CV IFS. This should be all the info you need to make your decision...

The inside width of a 56 F100 (fender lip to fender lip) is in the neighborhood of 74 inches...published outside dimension is 75.68 inches so 74 is an educated estimate. The frame is 34 inches wide...74 minus 34 is 40, divided by 2 gives you 20 inches on each side to play with. Subtract the 16 inches for the CV IFS and you now have just 4 inches from the rotor mounting surface to the inner edge of the fender. That is not a lot of space to work with...

The manufacture of the vehicle publishes the tread / track width and you are right the wheel offset determines that. I don’t think that you are going to find the hub to hub measurement unless someone has gone out and measured it, as Wayne said. I’m going to give you some links to posts on this site (lots of reading) that you might have already read but it just might mention that measurement you are looking for.

It is my understanding even the stock Crown Victoria had a very large inside offset to their wheel as the hub to hub is very wide. It is also my understanding that for most a applications the CV cross member is too wide and almost always necessitates a offset wheel, certainly will on f1’s. Some transplants have been done on early f00 but most on 65 and up because of the wider tread / track on these trucks.

It is kind of interesting (I don’t have much of a life) that some projects shown here get off to a flying start and then just die out with no final conclusion, leaves us guessing what happened.

Please read the posts and tell me your observations, thanks.

This is from measurements taken from an '05 Crown Vic. as close as I could measure.

Track width with stock wheels - 63 1/2
Hub to hub surface - 67 1/2
Outside of tire - 71 1/4

The '02 and earlier which are sometimes used as a complete clip are different.

These measurements are from a '98 Crown Vic.

Track - 63
Hub to Hub - 63 1/4
Overall - 72

These measurements are from my '59 F-100

Track - 63
Hub to Hub - 62 1/2
Overall -69
You didn't state what year you were inquireing about.

Thank you very much.

I am glad I asked because it seemed to me by reading this was a common swap with a successful result.

Does anyone on here have any year of the Crown Vic IFS successfully installed on a 53-56 F100?

Please let me know.
