Dana 60 vs. Ford 9"
What is the weight carrying ability and towing capacity of these truck axles.
1969 dana 60: with 9 3/4" ring gear and 16 spline axles which are
only 1 3/16" in diameter?
1976 ford 9" truck rearend with 31 spline axles. Don't know the
axle diameter?
Thanks, Duane in VA.

I dont know the exact weight, but the Dana can carry a much heavier load. Its full floating, unlike the ford 9". Just so youre aware, the 69 Dana 60 isnt as wide as the 76 9".
It seems that in the 67-72 pickups, the rear is a couple inches narrower than the front. I have a 72 Dana 60 posi i was gona put in the back of my 78, but decided it would look stupid, and not be worth the trouble.

The D-60 is a work horse for carrying loads. The double timken bearings that allow it to be full-floating is the reason behind this. Unless you're going to be using big (+35") tires and lots of skinny pedal then the 16 splines will be ok.
The D60 vs 9" debate is never ending. each has it's pro's and con's. If you're using it for working then D60.
