I'm getting ready to change my oil in my 1985 Ford F-150.

The engine is a 300 Straight Six, 230,000 miles.


What would be the best oil to get?

What brand? What weight?

 

I personally like using 10w-40 on older such as what you have and any brand that uses dino oil, (valvoline, castrol, penzoil, quaker state, sinclair, amsoil) and a little blue bottle of STP oil treatment as it's very high in zinc and that's good for the engine. For oil filters I use Wix

 

I've ran Shell Rotella T 15w40 for a couple years with absolutely no problems. If it's good enough for dirty, sooty diesel engines in semis, it's good enough for a much cleaner gas engine.

For filters, I've had good experience with Motorcraft and Wix.

 

i agree with the 10-w40. as for brands i'd go with fepowerguy said. pretty much all of them out there except for noname in-store brands like a proline, coastal, autozone (if they even make it). i guess a decent rule of thumb would be if you see the oil company advertise on nascar it's a safe enough brand to use (haha).

i usually watch the circulars and pickup whatevers on sale at the parts store. i think advance is running a special now with castrol oil and a puralator filter. i picked u some of those.

also, i've used fram, motorcraft, puralator filters and never had a problem. you'll see a lot of people swear off fram but i've had good experiences. i think as long as you're changing your oil every 3K it doesn't make much of a difference if any.

 

I totally agree. I use 15W-40 diesel oil and wix or motorcraft filters. Rotella is usually the easiest find, as nearly everyone carries it.

I'm one that will not touch a fram oil filter. I've had people try to tell me they are fine, but I've seen one that ruined an engine. I believe in the adage of "screw me once, shame on you, screw me twice, shame on me".

 

Fram's anti drain back valve is made of cardboard, any good filter (Napa Gold, Wix) has a metal valve, they hold up and seal better unlike the Fram.

Currently I'm running a Napa brand filter (it was free) for a 460 on my 300. It screws right on, and is almost twice as long as the standard filter... more capacity and filtration can't hurt, right?

 

I don't know for sure about the standard NAPA filter, but the NAPA gold is made by wix.

 

The deal with a larger filter boils down to filtration surface area, they do not filter better, they just don't plug as quickly.

Personally, I do not like the plain Napa filters, Napa Gold or nothing from Napa... The Napa Gold is a Wix filter.
