Does anyone own or know the GVW of the F350 4x4 pickups?
I'm looking at an '86 F350 SRW 4x4 pickup, and would like to know the GVW number.
In Mass, we're now required by law to pass the US DOT inspection for any vehicle over 10k GVW...
I'd like to be AT or below 10k to avoid the DOT Inspection so I can work with the truck, make my money, and afford to repair the truck so I can pass the DOT inspection next summer.
I'm fresh out of community college (graduated tonight) and am still flying under the radar as far as my trucks/landscaping business goes.
I want to get all my ducks in line, but can't afford a nice truck that would immediately pass DOT. We all know the fever, buy an IDI and fix it up nice...then WORK it hard!

You're below 10k that's for sure, the only 1-ton trucks that reach 10k are some duallies (such as mine, right at 10k). The GVWR is listed on the door jamb tag, it will also tell you the axle ratings too (which actually add up to more than the GVWR, but that's irrelevant for your situation).

 

My F350 is the the highest I've seen (single rear wheel) at something like 11,100 or so. It had 5.13 gears in that rear end.

That said is your inspection based on what the vehicle's door panel says or what you license it as? In WI we tell the DMV what we are licensing it as - no checking of the door stickers goes on or anything. I've been contemplating bumping it up to 10k lbs on this next round. The difference from 8,500 and 10,000 is $49/year

 

Well, my 1985 F350 Long Wheelbase Cab and Chassis is 10k lbs.
My buddies 86 F350 Short wheelbase cab and chassis 4x4 is 11k lbs and they had to get it DOT Inspected.
My spare truck is a short wheelbase cab and chassis that the VIN registers as 11k lbs...which puts me into DOT inspection.

The F250's are at 8,600 lbs, so I figured the F350 SRW pickups would be around 10k or a little less.

In Mass, the inspection is based on the VIN number weight.
If the registered weight haas been changed, I assume they would then use the registered weight for inspection purposes.

Swoosh, I'm thinking somebody converted your truck over to SRW using SRW hubs on the front end. I assume that truck used to be a dually if it has 5.13 gears....ouch!

 

Here is the ratings of my reg-cab dually pickup truck:
- front axle: 3690 lbs
- rear axle: 7400 lbs
- GVW: 10000 lbs

Factory dually wheels are rated at 2500 lbs each, good 235/85-16 tires are rated at right around 3k single and 2700 lbs dual. For a SRW truck to have a rating of 10k then it will need rear wheels and tires that can handle 3700 lbs each, now I dunno what factory single wheels are rated for but even the LT265/75-16 highway tires I got on my front axle are rated at 3400 lbs which is below what's needed for this application.

So really as long as your truck is a SRW you will be below the 10k limit, regardless of how strong the frame and axles are the wheels and tires will be your limiting factor.
