Wow, lots of great information! So, I guess I have two choices. One, take a guess and go with the mercon and cross my fingers hoping type F is not in the converter. Two, drain the converter if I can find that plug. Looking at my truck this morning I saw the inspection plate which is about 3-4 inches long and about 2-3 inches tall. Is this the dust plate? Or is the plate the larger piece which covers the entire flywheel? Sorry for all the questions guys but I truly appreciate the input.

 

Yep, the small one with two small bolts. Take that off and you'll be looking at the flex plate which the Torque Converter is bolted to. There will be 4 nuts holding the TC on and beside one of them there will be hole and that's where the drain plug is, I think it's a 3/8" or 7/16" head. You'll have to have someone bump the motor around till you see it. And if I'm not mistaken a a total drain and refill is a little over 13 qts.

 

Great! Thanks phatjack, I will look into it tomorrow. I guess that is probably a better way to do things instead of just guessing. When you say bump the motor you mean try to start the truck correct?

 

Yep, keep clicking the starter till you get the drain plug on the bottom or as close as you can.

Ok , I drained my torque conerter today. Like you guys mentioned it was a piece of cake. Now, the question is, how many quarts of tranny fluid do I need to purchase? Will the torque converter fill on its own once I start filling the tranny with the fluid? I have decided to go with the Dextron 111/Mercon fluid. hopefully this works!

 

Probably should get around 14 quarts, give or take 1.

Are you using only the stock tranny cooler in the radiator or are you also using an inline as well? Probably need to add about a quart for each external cooler if you have one.

Which, I should mention, is a good idea to have anyways. The cooler you can get the fluid the happier the transmission will be.

I use dual Thinline coolers, and it is pretty difficult to get the tranny temp over 170, even on a 95 degree day hauling rock.

Ok will do, I will start with 9 quarts. I believe the truck only has one cooler which is part of the radiator but no inline cooler. How much are those inline coolers? Are they easy to install?

 

Super easy and most are under $40.

Hello gentlemen! I have a 79f100 ranger with original C6 transmission,but some times it slips, Recently it overheated after speeding while climbing a hill would it be a good idea to change the tranny fluid and filter or will need to be rebuilted? I hope you experience guys can help me with this issue.. thank you

 

Cheap insurance to go ahead and change the fluid. Be sure to drain the torque convertor as well to try and get as much old fluid removed as possible.

If i drain The convertor how do I refill it? and what are the possibilities of fixing my tranny if I just change fluid and filter will I notice improvement shifting?
