Can I use a 5.0 distributor with 5.8

I'm converting my Bronco from a 302 to a 351, but the 351 harness will not work with my truck. the distributor for the 351 has different conectors so i need to use the distributor from my 302. I know it will fit , will the electrics from the 302 distributor work with 351?

the dizzy from the 302 will not fit. you must have a 5.8 specific dizzy.

what year harness are you using? what year bronco are you doing the swap on?

I am going to assume you have the computer from the 88 as well as the harness... you are going to need it. Is the 92 an auto or manual? Was the 88 auto or manual? Sorry to change subjects on you but the dizzy is the least of your concerns if you don't have a computer that will run your particular engine/transmission setup.

The 92 has E40D and i have a 5.8 computer for another truck with E40D. The harness from the 88 will not fit my 92 and the 88 it had the AOD trans. So i was going to use the 5.8 E40D computer with my 302 harness. When i matchted the two harnesses up the only difference i see is the dizzy connection and the knock sensor. unless i'm missing something?

ok first off. the 5.8 never came mated to the AOD in a bronco or truck so if you arent 100% sure what tranny it was bolted up to you need to find a 5.8/e4od flexplate. if someone did swap a 5.8 into a rig with the AOD the flexplate will be wrong for your current swap.

your 5.0 harness will work just fine. wrap up the Knock sensor and locate a 5.8 dizzy from a 92-95 5.8 and you will be set.
what year 5.8/e4od ecu did you get? what vehicle exactly.

The computer is from a 92 bronco 5.8/e40d. u may be right about the 88 trans, i know it isn't the E40D and i do have the trans from the 88, it has a small oil pan.Do you know what trans was in 88 or was there more then one. Good point on the flex plate. Do i only use one from a 5.8 e40d or is there others. What about the converter? do i use mine from the 302/e40dor do i fine one from a 5.8 e40d?

Is it too late to bring back the 302? You might be way ahead in the long run.

the 302 needs rebuild, no compression in #3 and below 90 in all others. I would rather spend time with this 351 motor that has good compression and low miles. i was getting 130-150 compression on the 351, it was hard to get a good seal on the compression gauge that y the big range.

that computer you describe is correct so use that one for sure.

the C6 was the only other auto available behind the 5.8 from the factory in a bronco or f150.

leave your current e4od converter alone. you just need a 5.8/e4od or C6 flexplate. reason is the 5.8 has a 28oz imbalance on the flexplate. the 5.0 has a 50oz imbalance. also the flexplates are tranny specific. your on the right track so dont get to frustrated. I did this very swap many years back. your almost there!

not that i recall. a new flexplate tends to only run maybe $45-60 at most. good insurance so you dont have a problem and tear either the motor out or have to pull the tranny.

Kem, I just checked the 88 trans and it has 17 bolts on the pan making it a C6 from my book. I still may replace it cause some of the teeth don't look so good. Is there a special socket for the bolts or just a reg shock will do. Should I use loctite red on the bolts when i replace them?
