I kinda need help quick, so the other weekend I hooked up to my buddys landscaping trailer, everything was fine until I plugged in the harness, No Lights...no big deal cuz it wasnt much of a drive, but I gotta haul a boat tomrrow a little ways and Id like to be legal lol.

I need some suggestions on cleaning my trailer plugs. What is the best way to clean the terminals on the small 4 prong? The big plug is fine, just a little dirt inside the cover, but im still going to clean the contacts and put di-electric grease on them.

My advice is to forget trying to use the 4 prong and get an adaptor for the big one. Much easier to keep the big on reliable based on my own experience. The big one also latches in better.

 

thought about gettin an adapter but id like to try and get my stock 4 prong working first before saying eff it.

worse case scenario ill buy an adapter.

 

well i have used pipe cleaners and que tips in a hurry it that helps, then grease it up.

I think I might have a small wire brush, maybe even a .22 brass cleaning brush would work, and possibly some electric cleaner.

 

wd 40..baby bottle brush may help...yeah that is 14K and 40' of 5th wheel there.

 

You need something that will clean the copper corrosion. I use bar keepers friend cleaner. Another thing that works well is jewlery cleaner.

 

I'm just guessing, but what about murietic acid or possibly vinegar?

 

You can buy spray cans of electrical contact cleaner which may help. I'd prefer getting in there with a brush or narrow abrasive to get it clean, then dielectric grease to keep it from corroding again. Good luck.

 

I don't think I would ever put muietic acid on there. that stuff eats thru everything.

 

Don't use this,we used it to clean the drums on our cement mixers,it tears through stuck on, dried out concrete.Not good for electrical connections.

 

If you use muratic acid the plug will be gone tomorrow

A brush that fits those small openings has been available at many RV dealerships for years and maybe some automotive stores. Not sure about the automotive stores. Not much demand for it, so it many be hard to find. I have one on my truck, but seldom use it. If an RV dealer doesn't have it, they can easily get you one as they are in the catalogs.
