2001 F250 SD 4X4 5.4L with manual transfer case.

4X4 and "LOW RANGE" lights do not momentarily illuminate when the engine is started like the manual states. 4X4 indicator does not illuminate when the xfer case is shifted to 4X High. However, the "LOW RANGE" light does illuminate when shifted all the way into 4X Low.

Any ideas?

 

Sounds like the indicator lamp is burned out, Grumpy.

 

Redford has it right, same thing happened on mine right after I bought it, but I also had alot of other lights on the cluster burned out. If you are going to go pull the cluster to replace the 4x4 lights, I would change all the lights even if they are working so you don't have to get back in there. I changed all my lights but the low range light as it was working, got it put back together and 3 days later my low range light no longer works . So now I am waiting till I have to pull the dash apart for something else to fix that one light.

Knowing that these lights have a history makes it the most logical place to start, though I was hoping there would be something else "quick & easy" I could check before opening up the dash. It kind of fits too because I noticed my CRUISE light doesn't come on either, even thought the cruise control itself seems to work just fine. Also, I wasn't sure if you could replace individual lights in the instrument cluster, or if it was a sealed unit. Maybe I'll just add this to my growing list of summer projects. It's not like its anything critical, really just the convenience of not having to look down at the shifter to tell if I'm in 4WD or not.

Where did you get the lights? Ford parts counter? Does anyone make LED replacements for these bulbs? This is the 21st century and replacing these tedious little incandecents should be a thing of the past by now!

 

You can get the lights at any autoparts store Orielly sells bulk packs, there are two sizes, I used 194s for the cluster illumination and IIRC 24s were used for the individual indicator lights (i.e. 4x4, cruise, low range, SES) I know I am right about the 194s but someone feel free to correct me if the 24's are not right, I just remember them being little. HTH.

 

I would go thru every single light you can make come on before you pull it apart. You might have another bunch of lights out that you dont notice. Or worst case just replace them all if you plan on keeping the vehicle. Thats what I would do.

 

Just noticed that the CRUISE light does in fact work. I just didn't notice it before because it's dark green. Not very good human factors engineering on that one!

Its getting harder to justify tearing open the dash just to fix one stupid light!

 

Yes, it does suck. If you decide to dive in, also get a can of compressed air from the local computer section and blow out all the dust you find (and there will be some). You could also use an air hose, but keep the pressure dialed down low.
