Heater Hose Routing with cooled carb spacer

I've got a 390 with a carb spacer that runs the water thru it and I can't find any pics in the manuals that show how the hoses go.

I have
1 outlet from the water pump
2 from the front of the intake (one goes back to carb spacer)
1 from the front of the carb spacer
1 from the rear of the carb spacer
2 to the heater core

Which hose holds the heater control valve too?

I'm guessing one goes straight to the heater core from the water pump and one goes from heater core back to the intake, but what about the rear of the carb spacer?

Thanks, KarlJay.

When I had mine hooked up, one line came from the water pump to the carb spacer, from the spacer to the heater control valve, and on to the heater core. The other line was simply a return. This may not be correct, but it worked for me.

If you check my Gallery, I have a pretty good shot where some of the hoses should go. One of the hoses looks a little short (It was the wrong length), but it should hopefully give you a pretty good idea. My motor is in the process of being put back together. Hopefully within the next few weeks my truck will be on the road

Heater Hose Routing with cooled carb spacer

Hi Karl, I'm trying to picture it now…

Starting at the T fitting out of the intake, the hose bib facing directly back goes to the front of the carb. heated spacer. From the back of the spacer, it goes to a T on the return side of the heater core, then back to the water pump. This way coolant is always running through the spacer even with the heater control valve off. The heater return line is the fitting closest to the fender.

The other fitting on the intake T goes to the heater control valve and then into the heater.

I think that’s right, I have a diagram at home that I can scan tomorrow if you want.

Barry,

I was with ya, right up to the point about the return line being closest to the fender. I looked at mine and it seems a PO must have switched them. All this means is that the coolant flows backwards through my heater core, yes?

Yes that sounds right (I think). I'm gonna go home for lunch and get that diagram.

I think my Gallery pics show precisely that routing for the hoses... might save you the trouble of finding the diagram.

Hi James, I didn’t want to say anything ‘cause I was just going by memory but yours didn’t look quite right. Have the diagram now and it looks just the way I described it (got lucky). It’s from group 16, page 18 of the ’68 Ford truck shop manual, vol. 3.

If you’re all interested, pm me your email addresses and I can send you a scan, it’s approximately a 300Kb GIF image.

Interesting... from what I could tell it looks as though it was routed properly from what the description reads. Perhaps I did route it incorrectly? Its been a year since it was together and running, so I may have made a mistake.

Wow, it almost looks as though I have it on backwards? That's how it was when I got the truck. I'll have to see about rerouting the hoses (should be easy since I don't have any antifreeze in it yet). Interesting..

Yeah, the way I see it, you have two feeds going into the carb. spacer.

Take the Tee out of the feed line and put it in the return line, that's all you need to do.

James , the picture of your truck sitting under the tree looks exactly like a truck that was for sale on ebay awhile back. I was going to bid on it but just couldn't afford it at the time. You've got a real neat truck. ...fd

Thanks! yeah, thats where my truck came from. I was the sole bidder on it... paid 500 bucks for it. It took a little work to get it running... but its well worth what I paid for it. Of course I have put brakes, rebuilt the motor, and a few other things, but I plan on having it for a long time to come.

Thanks Barry!
I would have spent hours just to get it wrong!
I didn't know the outlet on the waterpump was a return, it all makes sence now.
Thanks again.
