Has any one replaced the pitman shaft seal on the power steering grear box with power steering? how hard of a job is it? and what r things i should no about doing this and help would be appericated since ive never messed with it.

No 1, spray that pitman shaft with the best penetrating oil you have a few day's in advance if possible and repeat as necessary..LOL You need a pitman arm puller. I have used impact wrenches with success, I've had some where I heated the pitman arm with a torch, cooled the shaft with spray coolant and they snapped off. For the most part, they pulled off with no issues. Match Mark the pitman arm with a center punch where it was removed. Some pitman arms can fit in any position on the shaft, you want your new one replaced in the exact position the old was removed.

Don`t want to upset you, but if the lower sector shaft seal is leaking, chances are that the bore that the sector shaft rides in is worn egg-shaped, and a new seal will likely not be a permanant cure. Ford simply bored the hole in the casting, and over time and miles, the holes wears, and the seal can`t maintain it`s seal on the excessive side to side movement. I went thru all this several years ago on my 74 F350. The best "fix" was installing a rebuilt power steering box from "Steering Solutions", a local company that modifies the box by boring the hole larger, and installing a bearing in the bottom of the box, where the sector shaft rides. The new box, and a new "rag joint" made a huge improvement in the truck driving feel. Also, you may want to inspect your radius arm bushings, when my PS box was leaking, the fluid leaked onto the rubber bushings, and they eventually swelled up & split. I replaced the rubber bushings with Energy Suspension urethane bushings.

 

No u didnt upset i apericiate the info, for now im just going to replace the seal aint got to much money at the moment but does that palce have a website for those steering boxs? and have u had any problems replairin the modefide box?

 

They do have a web site ( www.steeringsolutions.com ), but it is very minimal. I am sure that there must be a good shop that does similar work closer to you though. As for the box itself, it is still a direct boltup, the bearing is all inside, so there is no outward difference in appearance or fit.
