Cool 7.3l died while driving

Ok I was driving pulling a toy Hauler. Then the truck just died. I had a spare CPS and replaced it and it still did not run. I thought it might be the IDM again so I changed it out with a known good one from a running truck also swapped it and mine works also. I bought another CPS and it still not working. I have an AE and found no new codes. The ones that are in it come and go. P1209,P1211 and P340. I have cleared them and still it will not run. I did a buzz test it was ok. Any ideas.

Maybe a really stupid idea, but did you take it by a gas station and fuel up? Sticking fuel sending unit possibly?

I'll ask the moderator to move this to the 7.3 forum for help there. You might want to cruise over there and search for those codes as well.

Any fuses blown that you can see? Fuel bowl heater sometimes shorts out, blows a fuse that keeps the truck from starting, but I'm not sure if it would stop her while running.

I had a 7.3 about 5 years back that did the same thing and for the life of me I can't remember what it was although I do know it was an electrical cheap and easy fix O2 sensor perhaps?

Already changed out the CPS. I used an known good one and I bought a new one today. With no changed.

Also If it was a Sticking fuel sending unit wouldn't it run just run rough?

Checked fuse first and found none blown.

Did notice while cranking I see no smoke from the exhaust. It has a chip and normally I would if I just cranked on it for awhile.

If you're still getting the P0340 then you've either got a bad CPS or bad wiring to the CPS. Check to make sure the little rubber plug is in the end of the CPS connector and make sure the wires are not chaffed.

Your other codes are ICP related, so try unplugging the ICP sensor on the front inboard side of the drivers head to see if it starts then.

What year is your truck? Does the WTS light come on with the key, then go off like normal? Can you hear the fuel pump come on with the key? Does the tach bounce while cranking?

F350-6,
I bought a CPS last night and replaced it. The P0340 never came back and neither did P1209 or the P1211. Not sure but does the truck have to run to have these codes. After replacing the CPS I ran the AE KOEO and the buzz test and no codes or error came of the test. If something happen to the fuel system would the AE pick it up.

The truck is a 2001 F350 XLT 4x4 4D long bed 6" lift with 37X13.50X18. The only mod on the engine is a Super chip. I have backed that out and it is stock currently.

The WTS light comes on normally and turns off.

I can hear the fuel pump come on.

Yes the tach does move when cranking. It goes from 0 to the middle of 0-1. If no movement wouldn't that mean a bad CPS?

More info... Before it stopped running. It ran rough and loss of power and at time when loss of power it would recover with power. Hope that helps

Thanks for your help

have you checked the filter bowl? if you got a vapor lock (from running low or out of fuel) it will act as use describe and not throw any codes. is your tank full?

I ran it until there was about 1/8 of a tank and then filled it up. It ran until 3/4 of a tank then died going down the highway. I will check the filter in the bowl when I get home.

Is there any way to test the IPR or the ICP?

AE won't help you with fuel issues, but it will help with ICP / IPR. First, turn the key on then open the fuel bowl drain valve. See if you're getting a strong pressurized stream of fuel coming out the fuel bowl drain tube. If yes, close the tube and hook up AE.

Go to the live data tab and select ICP psi and ICP duty % (IPR). Also go ahead and select engine rpm, engine oil temp, battery voltage, injector pulse width, and it seem like there's an option for MAP, if not use BARO. Crank the truck and watch what the numbers do while cranking.

ICP must reach 500 psi min to start. If it does, watch to see how high ICP duty % climbs. Watch to see how low voltage drops while cranking and make sure you're seeing at least 150 rpm's.

Codes like CPS or ICP will set them self after 20 or 30 seconds of cranking. I wouldn't crank any longer than that without giving the starter a break to cool down. To answer your earlier question, yes a dead tach on an 01 means a bad CPS or CPS wiring.

And another easy test for the ICP is to unplug the sensor and see if the truck starts with it unplugged.
