Angry how to test glow plugs?

Hi every one,

I was hoping that someone might be able to help me out with this little problem i may have or have some suggestion on what it could be?

when I start it in the morning after i wait 8-10 sec it starts right up but seems to run very ruff and and has a white/ gray smike to and has a lack of power but id i let it idle for 10-15 min or go up the road a block or two the smoke is gone and is running just fine and does this anytime i let it sit for a bit i was thinking it might be the glow plug or plugs and have not idea on how to test them to find out don't want to replace them all or could it be the "O"ring sel around one of the enjectors and have no idea on where to srat their either or how test them to figure out which one it might be and this is on a 1992 ford F250 7.3 non-turbo diesel I am at a point to where I am lost on what to do and their are no diesel shops in my area except the dealships and would rather pass on them and what they charge just to test it out and whant to see if their is any what i can do this myself

thank for any advice anyone may have other than it's a FORD...

An Ohm-meter. Or I have tested them using a peice of wire and needle noze pliers to hold them directly to the battery terminals out in the open and see if they get red hot.

Glow plugs just get you goin. The chamber is warm enough after about 10-15 sec not to need them.

Retarded timing will blow white smoke. Things do wear over time and need ot be adjusted.

There are two very good post about how to test glow plug systems here on the forum. They are to two first posts on the page take a gander at them, they will probably answer all your questions about the glow plug system. I would agree with tabascom16 however. If the truck starts with no problems after it has been cold soaked then your glow plugs are working just fine.

Is your cold start advance working, along with the fast idle solonoid. they are controlled by the same temp switch. A leaky injector can also cause this, as can a small amount of air intrusion. Test your glow plugs first and get back to us.
