Dropped the front tank on an 84' F150 yesterday, the fuel level gauge is not working on either tank. So where does the float go when it's not in there anymore? Is the truck that hungry ? Have any of you had any luck replacing just that float?

probably sank to the bottom of the tank, or if you just bought the truck that person never replaced the old one if he did replace the sending unit. You can buy the floats from your local parts store or try National Parts Depot(NPD) they have a store in canton Mi. or order from them online.

 

It's not in there, the front one anyway, I'll order a couple for sure. I haven't removed the back one to see if it is gone too or if there is some other problem.

 

I just finished a R&R on my rear tank. The guage had quit working among other things. The original float, made of brass, was about 1/3 full of gasoline. It cost $14 at the Ford dealer. They run $5-$6 plus shipping on line. The fuel lines are locked in place by plastic clips that are reletively pricey. I think about $2.50 each. Cost me $20 to get out the door.

The new float fixed the guage problem. I put gas in the rear tank and have been running off that tank. Needle is dropping faster than I think it should. I think it is pumping some of the gas into the front tank. I'll know if the diverter valve needs attention soon enough.

sdstriper, The float didn't just vanish. My guess is the former owner couldn't justify the price of a new float from the dealer. Rationalle; you never run out with two tanks so who needs a guage. (you better remember when one is empty). To me it was too much work dropping the tank to not fix it.

Note: my tank was remarkably clean inside. I have been a proponent of "Sea Foam" for almost twenty years.

 

The missing float could of gotten jammed somewhere in the tank. There are a few tight places on some tank designs. On my trucks when that float fills up, I hit the junkyards and find the hard foam floats that are in the car's sending units. I rebend the sending unit shaft for the float to fit on and bend the rod till I have the gauge set right. I make it read totaly empty with like 5 gals of gas left which is better than with no gas left!

 

This tank is not so rusty that it needs replacing but it has a lot of debris etc in there. I am going power wash it out I think. Then put some "heat" in there and a cheapy fuel water seperator in.
