Radio removal question on E-450

I have an RV built on a 1999 E-450 chassis. I want to be able to play my iPod through the stock radio/CD player. The radio is a stock unit with a single CD player feature. Can anyone tell me how to remove the radio from the front so I can see if there are RCA jacks on the rear? There are 4 small holes, two on each side of the radio thay I think accept a special tool that will release the unit but I'm not sure and really don't want to tear anything up. Thanks

There is a special tool, "ford radio removal tool" see link
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...0070921x00003a

I have heard of people bending clothes hanger and making one, I just bought my tool from autozone for about $.7.00

Hi 4dtruk,

I also happen to have a 1999 E450 based Fleetwood and want to install a Pioneer AVIC-X920BT Nav unit in it.

Crutchfield is telling me that this Ford chassis is not a DIN 2 (japanese) mount and that the Pioneer will not fit even though the factory radio that I have is dimensionally a 2 DIN mounting.

Have you had any luck taking your unit out.

I do have the Removal tool like the previous poster mentions but the unit seems to be stuck and does not want to come out when i press the tools in and engage in the holes with a "click"

Be persistant.... push the tool in and then pull outward (towards the doors)just a hair...and pull out. It should come out. If it doesn't, someone has broken the bracket inside and you will have to start removing the dash to pull the old radio out.

It is soooo close to a double DIN that all it'll take is a very SMALL bit of filing to shave off JUST a little to get the double DIN radio in...... no sweat. Lots have done it.

I bent a coat hanger to make 2 pieces just like the tool.

Worked fine for me.

Look at the pictures of how it interacts with the clips.. then just do it.

Persistence does pay off.

Its a crappy design because you have to get the tool to not go in too far as well as not far enough. Atleast on my E450 there is no hard stop for the tool. There is no reason there should not be. Anyway the radio is out.

Ford just has a single plug going to the radio in addition to the antenna.
(even though the radio has two connectors.)
The female plug on the cable side has a row of 16 on the bottom and 12 on the top with 2 pins on the end of the top row which are probably power and ground.
Whats the best place to get the pinout/wiring color code for all the signals?
Or better yet a harness to convert the cable plug to the Pioneer AVIC-X920BT plug or plugs?

Walmart, etc. sell a wiring harness that adapts to the plug.

Here are some color codes, check them out.

Thanks for the info.
I actually found:
eBay item #230407092961 harness to mate to factory plug and a DIN kit (which i may or may not use depending on how the Pioneer fits in the hole).
(it was less money than Wallmart or the other link u suggested.)

Any ideas where to tap signals for:

Speed Sense Signal
Parking Brake Signal
Reverse Gear Signal

These are obviously not present in the factory harness but would allow the pioneer to switch my backup camera in automatically and show a better position display on the Nav section.
I would think they are buried behind the dash somewhere?

After not too much filing and grinding the opening,
I now have the Pioneer installed and working.
The harness method is sweet because I can very easily
go back to the factory radio if needed.

The parking brake input simply went to a limit switch
right be the brake foot pedal.

The only thing left is the
Speed Signal and
The Reverse Gear Inputs.

Having trouble finding schematics online.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Reverse Gear input

I spoke with a Pioneer support tech, reverse gear input wires into backup lights I'm also trying to find out where the speed limit input wire goes.
