95 f150 trans swap and 2x4 to 4x4 conversion

I have a 95 F150 with the 300 4.9 motor. My big questions is can I swap a ZF manual in for the stock trans (M5R1 or M5R2 I believe). Also, what would be the benefit. This a farm truck that does get abused in pulling and towing things. Its 2x4 for now, was also considering getting a doner truck to swap out to make this 4x4, and advice on that? Amount of work is not an issue, money is my biggest issue for both of these projects.

swapping from 2x4 to 4x4 is bolt up as far as the front end you can get all the parts from a junkyard. There is a good writeup on it in the articles here 2x4 to 4x4 for '80 to '96 F-100/150's .: Articles the tranny and transfer case you can get from the pull a part yard also if you trust it. try to look for a manual shift transfer case those are the easiest to do the conversion with

if you are going to get a 4x4 truck to strip, it would be better to rob your parts and put on it to make one good truck..

jess it is acctually extremely simple to convert a 2x4 to 4x4 on these trucks because how they set up the 4wd the front axle is just bolt in and you can find a tranny and transfer case really easy

Its an easy swap. I just did it last month. I cleaned up all the parts before putting them on my truck and it worked out really nice.

But im still looking for a ZF and a T-Case.

You may want to steer clear of this plan for a while until you can save up more money. It'd suck to get deep into it and run out of funds.

I"m walking into this project with $500 and plan to be quite successful thanks to pull-a-part and the ability to rebuilt transmissions and not needing the truck this spring right away. I think it should be quite simple after looking at the setup on a 4x4.

Once I gather the parts and rebuild the "new" front diff and begin, I'll post pics and make a guide out of it so others can go down the same road should they choose.
