04 F250, 6.0 turbo diesel

Any comments on the 6.0 Turbo Diesel, how long should it last? I was told the 6.0s in this year are junk? Or is someone trying to make us sell the truck instead of fixing the egr and egr trigger?

I have a 2004 crew, 03 engine. Heads done at 204,000km currently at 340,000km(210000miles). I run about 1500km per week. Don't be afraid of these engines.

Do the maint as required when required. Its a fine engine, just needs to be treated right.

I have owned n IDI, 2 97 7.3, 1 2000 7.3, and this 2004 6.0.

Engine wise my faves were the 97's and the 6.0.

I vote fix it.

I am thinking about buying the exact same truck, heard more about headstud issues then anything else. i dont plan on racing it or anything. Bigger tires adn that'd be about it.
I just want a nice reliable stocker diesel for cruising.
Opinions?

As i have posted before...I had my 06 6.0 for 1 1/2 years...no more diesels...to many problems... and to much $$$$ for everyday maintenance. Get a V10.

There is really no way to answer this question because it depends on things like: was the engine a problem child from the factory, how has the truck been driven, how has the truck been maintained, has there been any reliability mods added, has there been any performance mods, etc. All that being said I have read of properly maintained 6.0L engines that have 300K miles (i.e. the engine should last a long time).

I think most people would agree that the 2005 and later 6.0L engines are better than the 2003 & 2004. However, there are many people with '03 & '04 models that have been very happy with their trucks.

I would spend the dollars on repair if you have had good luck with the truck to date and have maintained it well. The EGR is common issue for these trucks, follows are some links for more info and proper cleaning procedures.

Thanks to all, I am going to try to make them keep the truck. It is a company truck, has has 3 main drivers, two have been conservative, one a younger madman (ah, yes, and there lies the trouble). Truck only has 120,000+ miles on it.
I know they will replace it with a gas truck - so I say KEEP IT!!
Wish me luck with the big guy, J

27 — 3.31, non-limited slip, F-150, F-250<O</O
28 — 3.73, non-limited slip, F-150, F-250<O</O
H9 — 3.55, limited slip, F-150, F-250<O</O
