I have a 2004 F250 SD. I purchased it with 93,000 miles on it and now have 104,000 on it. I have begun to have problems with it. I noticed about a month ago that my heat wasn't blowing real hot. I added a gallon of anti-freeze and that restored it. I just thought it was low. A week ago it started blowing smoke. I made a short highway trip and upon exiting I lost all throttle response for a few miles. The only response I had was when pressed completely to the floor. That to went away. Now the smoke is continueous and as of today I again had to add a gallon of anti-freeze. Now I have oil running out of the drain hole in the exhaust pipe. The truck has no modifications. Anybody have any answers? I want to be informed prior to going to the dealor. Help please.

 

sounds like the Egr cooler if your adding coolant. Does the smoke smell like coolant or Oil. If it is oil it could be the turbo. does the coolant in the degas bottle look oilly maybe it's the oil cooler that would be two things maybe.
But the oil looking substance leaking out the exhust could be coolant with soot mixed and it look llike oil.

 

Your oil cooler is more than likely pluged with casting sand and now your egr cooler is cooked because of lack of coolant flow and that's why your heater was not puttting out the heat along with low coolant leavel too. If the smoke is blue your FICM is more than likely toast also because of a flash ford had out that put to much voltage through the circuit board and cooks it.
Sorry for the bad news but you might as well know what these 6.0's are capable of. This is just my opionion, but don't ask how I know this!
Hopefully I am 100% wrong!

PS: I am thinking that the fluid running out the tail pipe is coolant.

 

Unfortunately I went thru your same scenario about a week ago. My truck was loosing water and started bellowing white smoke out the exhaust.(which was actually steam from the water) It was sluggish and was extremely lacking in power. The last thing to happen was a puddle that came from the muffler. Although it looked like oil it was actually a mixture of soot and water....not oil. Hopefully this is the case. My truck is still at the mechanics and the diagnosis is bad egr cooler and valve. The total for the parts alone is approx. 1000. and about another 1000 in labor.

Do yourself a favor and rebiuld the oil cooler that is the cause of the egr cooler failure. I did one for a friend of mine that he had done at a independent shop and we had to do it again to get it fixed correctly. Just a heads up.

 

jdw1 is spot on with the oil cooler replacement advice. I did not replace mine. 18000 miles later it blew out. $220 for the new oil cooler core and the pleasure of redoing all the work again. By the way, I backflushed my original the first time. Do not bother, waste of time, replace it.

 

Do you self a favor and go with a FULL EGR delete kit, you do not need it. In reality it increases your emissions to the negative.
Leave your EGR valve installed with the wires plugged in, this will pass the visual emission test (if you need it some day). You may need a programmer to reset, clear codes if comes to that. I get mine emission tested every 2 years and it is cleaner with out the EGR.
This will save your head gaskets and your wallet...
Just do it and thank me later.

 

Ok. Thanks for all the help. It turned out to be a bad egr cooler caused by a bad oil cooler. The oil running out of the exhaust turned out to actually be anti-freeze mixed with a high soot content. Replaced both coolers, ran the BG cleaning kit, flushed the cooling system and changed the oil...good as new. For now. I found one of my local Ford dealership mechanics that does work on the side...$1200.00. A little poorer, but the truck is running. Thanks again.

 

The next time your EGR cooler fails (it will), Delete it!
Do not waste your $$$$.$$ on replacing it.
