Hi, does anybody know if there are different rebuild kits for a C6 that's in a truck as opposed to one that's in a car? And actually, did say, a Mustang come stock with a differently geared C6 than my truck did?

The reason I ask is that I am probably about to rebuild the C6 in my 79 150 4X4, and so I'm looking for rebuild kits, but the only ones I've found so far have been one of two kinds: kits to way beef up and gear down your tranny for serious off road stuff, or just completely generic unspecified rebuild kits, and I'm not trying to build a tank, I know that, but I would like to try to go a little stronger than just a completely stock C6.

Thanks, I gave those 4 a decent looking over. I've also been looking at one called broaderperformance.com, which if anybody knows anything about then let me know, but what is the difference between all these places?
The prices for rebuild kits from jsut this handful of sites goes all the way from just over 100 to almost like 700 bucks, what is the difference between what I get from each, and how can I tell myself which one is best?
I know this is getting pretty specific, but this is alot of money, and I only have one chance to order the right one and not mess it up.

All C6s were geared the same from the factory. 2.46, 1.46 1:1.

As you noted, you can change first and second with parts from a different trans through the conversion kits offered by various outfits.

That's another example.

You might look at that site, as they specify what's included in beefing up a C6 to various levels.

What is the difference between people selling transmission parts over the internet? Who knows? You can usually find reviews or complaints by searching the company name, or checking the BBB.

You may get some feedback here.

What is the difference in kits? Each kit should tell exactly what is included. Performance or beefed parts are usually described and you are advised why it's better. Ask the seller why his kit is more or less. Made in US or Made in China? Many factors.

You ever rebuild a trans before? You checked on the tools needed?

 

Nope, I've never done much of anything with the transmission before, that's alot of the reason why I want to. It's the only part of the truck that I'm really just not too clear on still.
Big reason that I bought this truck was because my first one was too complete, and I wanted more of a learning experience. So I do my research, and I ask as many questions as I can, and then pray that I'm not missing anything too big haha. I like digging into something and figuring it out eventually, even if you didn't know exactly what you were getting into at first.
Yes though, I have been talking to a few people about special tools that I may need, and I'm planning everything out before I start. I also talked to a bunch of people and made sure that this was something that I could do, and a C6 is about the simplest one that you can find to practice or learn on is what I've heard.

Make sure you flush the cooler and lines out real good before putting it back in. You don't want the old crap left in there going into a fresh rebuild.

 

Get the Haynes Techbook #10355 Ford Automatic Transmission Overhaul. I got it off ebay for $8.99 last month, the seller has a ton of them in stock still.

Also go over to www.460ford.com and do a search on the C-6 and a guy named Frank Merkl. This guy knows his stuff on C6 trannys and theres a sticky on the C-6 with a bunch of photos also.

I've done a few of them now, and they are so simple. First one I did in my apartment kitchen, the rest I did on an actual trans bench in a shop. Very simple, the only trick is setting up the thrust washers on the front shell, those are still available from Ford though. The rebuild manuals give you a spec, you just pry it forward and backwards to determine the play, and order the color of washer that is the right thickness to bring it into spec.
I have been told that the C6 used in the F250 4x4 from 73-77 had a deeper first gear, but I have never been able to confirm that.
