I have a "78 F100 2WD and when i was in high school i built it into kinda sorta a street rod. You know flashy paint, somewhat fresh motor ect. However being a kid cash was hard to come by. Well fast forward a few years and i've been in the navy for a few years and i'm finally getting some good cash. This weekend i'll have my garage wired and the welding machines ready and i want to hit the truck hard again. i was want to lower it but i don't like the twin I beam suspension and i was to do a mustand II front setup. Everything i have found so far is for older models such as pre-"78. Has anyone done this modification to our model? I have no problem with fabrication i just need to be pushed in the right direction.

I think the mustang II suspension would be an excellant set up under one of these trucks,it would cure the only downfall I think they have "wonder steer"
the mustang II is a great all around suspension that is pretty easy to put onto any application.what years did you find kits for?

 

So far i've found all kinds of kits for 1970 and older models. But since my model year is at the end of the 1970's spectrum I have no clue if it'd fit. I'm not really worried about finding a kit though, if someone can tell me whether or not i can just find a doner car and use that suspension.

 

Check Fatman Fab. I want to say they have one that will fit 73-79 trucks. I really want to say the ad says its goes up to 89 but I dont remember.

 

we took beams and wheel ends this summer from a 77 and put them in a 65 without having to change anything other then new brakes and bushings,I don't thin theres any difference in the front suspension size/setup in the twin beam,but like 77f100 said fatman fab has stuff for almost anything.
you could find yourself a mustang II or a pinto and take the control arms,buckets and such from and build your suspension if you have some time and knowhow.I'm not sure what you would do for a rack though.

thats a nice build,although once its all done I would be questionable to see if it was cheaper,mustang II stuff is cheap,and by the looks of that build every bit as easy.but thats a cool build just the same.

 

I have the drop I beams and I like them. Not the greatest set-up in the world but it gets the job done and gives it a nice stance. It has been 123mph in the 1/4 and 130 on the highway and I havent been scared by the steering. Here is a pic.

Here is a picture of the truck i'm talking about. I started building it when i was 12 to have ready for when i was in high school. And once i got it drivable i didn't do much more. But you can see why i want to get it lower.

I like that, i may do something like that. however i am thinking of just using the A-arms and spring perches because i want to fabricate a clean looking cross member out of something like 2x6 steel tubing. The only problem i can see with that is getting the rack and pinion mounted properly.
