differnce between 352 and 390

I have a 66 352cid. was looking for some performance parts. I found a few but had a question on intakes. I found the Edelbrock performer intake, but was lookin for something a little more high po. The Edelbrock Performer RPM says only for the 390 and up, is there a differnce between the two in order for the Performer RPM Intake not to work? Any Information would be very appriciated.
Thanks.

If Im not mistaken, the differences between the 2 is the stroke...possibly the bore too, but Im not 100% positive...I usually get them mixed up in my mind...

would there be any difference to why the two intakes would differ and not work? thanks for your help!

The intakes for 352/360/390's are all direct bolt on's from one to the other.
The variations are on those in later years with emissions stuff and depending if you want/have a 2 or 4 bbl carb.
As for the aftermarket stuff...its all about what you ultimately care about most...if you want go and arent worried about fuel mileage...or footage...I would go with what gives me more horses at the rear wheels. If the difference between the options is small...I would go for whichever gives best fuel consumption rate.
Ultimately its a choice based on the intended use of the engine...

On mine...I still have my 2 bbl boat anchor...if it aint broke, dont fix it...but thats my philosophy...of course Im a purist too with VERY little room for fudging...

Thanks a lot cs65. But i have one more question for you if you can and have the time. I have a good bit of old FE motors laying around. and a lot of them have 352 stamped on the block, but i know their not all 352's. how can u tell whether they are a 352 360 390 or what. the one im most concerned with i know came out of a 1966 Ford F100 with a 3speed manual trans. any ideas?

the way to tell if the engine has heads on it is by pulling a plug and putting a dowel or similar down the hole and measure the stroke...I dont know what the strokes of the 3 are off the top of my head.
As for the 352 cast in the driver side front face of the block...thats there because ALL FE engines begin life as a 352 as far as bore goes...once they are all finish machined to whatever is required they become anything up to and including 428 engines...assuming its of course in the FE engine family...

54-66F100man The 352 on the block is a foundry stamp, Most FE blocks have it stamped on them, or will have what is call a reversed image "105" (flip that image and that is what you will see. Those blocks mostly are later issues found many times in trucks, they have a little more webbing in the lower part of the block.

Any engines that you have that came from trucks will mostly be 352s or 360s and a slight chance of a 390. Any other would have been transplant.

Look at the numbers between the center spark plugs. D2 & D3 are later model and have hardened seats. They are also good flowing everyday heads.

Finding a reverse image block with D series heads should be a good candidate for rebuild.

The 360 (truck only) is a 390 bore block with 352 rotating assembly. Easily rebuilt back as a 390.

Find a 6-8in long piece of 14ga white house wire to measure the stroke. Remove all the plugs, poke the wire in the hole and have a friend turn the engine over by hand while you hold a Sharpie on the wire.

The difference in the intakes is very likely due to those with and without EGR capability. Other than that, they'll interchange.

Here is the simple way to tell them apart:
352 - 3.50 inch stroke x 4.00 bore
360 - 3.50 inch stroke x 4.05 bore
390 - 3.78 inch stroke x 4.05 bore

Essentially, a 360 is a 390 block using 352 rotating components (but that's not perfectly true, as rods and pistons are slightly different).
You can make a 360 into a 390 if you use a 390 rotating assembly, but it is not always possible to bore out a 352 enough to make it a 390 sized block.

Here's the easy way to check the stroke without removing the head. Get a straight 12 inch piece of white electrical house wire or coat hanger wire. Get a magic marker. Remove the number 1 spark plug. Turn the engine over until the timing mark is at TDC. Now, put the wire in the number 1 spark plug hole with the wire resting on the top of the piston. (Because the old timing dampers sometimes will slip, the timing marks may be off. Make sure the engine is at TDC in the Number 1 hole by rocking the crankshaft back a forth a bit. When the wire is as high as it will go, it is at TDC. Once you are sure it is at TDC, continue.) Make a mark on the wire even with the lip on the valve cover. Now rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees, until the wire is at its lowest point. Mark the wire again, at the lip, and measure the distance between the two marks.
Here are the specs: 3.98 is the stroke for the 410 and 428 engines; 3.78 is the stroke for the 390, 406 and 427 engines and 3.5 is the stroke for the 352 and 360 engines.
You have uncovered one of Ford's greatest mysteries! They say there are unknown forces moving about in the vicinity of FE motors. These forces know not the effect of the work that they do, nor can they explain how they do it, it is so dark and fearful a thing.
You see, the night before sale day, these evil ones, some impish, some brutish, all descend upon their intended victim - the FE doomed for sale! Using powers utterly unknown to mankind, these ghouls of the garage perform a mighty transmogrification! YES! IT WORKS! And the lowly 352 and the shortchanged but stout little 360 are transmogrified into the MIGHTY 390!

Be careful here. 352s and 360s are indistinguishable on the outside from a 390. The plain and less than desirable 352s and 360s have an eerie and mystifying ability, a phenomenon not yet scientifically understood. Upon hearing the word SALE, they are able to somehow transmogrify themselves into a radiant and powerful 390. However, the effect wears off during the first night after the sale is completed, and they revert to their former dull selves. (Research to capture this process to make it permanent without having to rebuild the sorry things is ongoing, but efforts to date have been fruitless. It is rumored that the Mechanics' Engine Rebuilders Cooperative "MERCs" has interfered with the testing laboratories, believing the discovery will cost jobs, but no proof is yet forthcoming. Details at 11.)

Of course their powers have only the 30-30 guarantee: 30 feet or 30 seconds, whichever comes first! Unfortunately, once you get it home your MIGHTY SUPER HERO 390 deflates to an underdog. ppptthhpphptphpptphpthphtpthh. ppth
