Hello to all,
I Have the following codes coming up po267, po270, po273, po279. I found that they are listed as the injector control circuit being low on 3 4 5 and 7. I tried to do a search in other threads but it seemed that the ones I found were when guys had all 8 cylinders throwing codes. What might be the problem for just the codes I have, please don't say it is a bad ficm. It is a 2003 with about 100,000 miles on it. It is currently still running (knock on wood) so I would like to fix it before it craps out all together. Thanks in advance for any help.

 

check out the FICM thread and check your voltage!!!

 

check the charging system. batteries and alternator. how does the truck run? is it smoking?

 

Batteries are less than a year old, alternator 6 months. I don't notice any excessive smoke, seems like it may have less power but it may just be my mind messing with me.
I had the light come on about three months back it did it a few times but then stopped but I did not have a code reader at the time. Just recently it came on again a few times but this time Mrs. Clause gave me one for Xmas so I used it for the first time and got those codes. Currently the light has been off for about 6 to 8 starting cycles and when it would come on would be when you were going down the road. I had some issues about six months ago with the light going off and took it in and was told it was the glow plug controll module so I replaced that.
It did within the last week have a few rough starts for a few mornings but we had about 6 inches of snow on the ground. It fired right up but it had a rough idle for a few seconds and then evened out so I figured it was due to the outside temp being so low (around 20 degreees).

I have had this truck since it was new but it is my first diesel so I am learning as I go (mainly due to this place)

 

at the sake of being repetive just because a part is new or has just been replaced does not by any means make it good.
reman alternators are not knowen to be the best. some are worse then others. I have put 4 on one truck before I got a good one.
also batteries tend not to like cold weather much and with a weak alternator they go bad fast.
food for thought here.
Your asking for help. Im offering up very sound information. It could be a ficm. it could be 4 failed injectors or it could be 2 of the 3 connectors at the ficm.
after testing the batteries you may want to try some dieeletric grease at the 3 ficm connectors.

 

I hear what you are saying and I appreciate all the advice. Most of what is under the hood of my truck is new territory for me, in the past it just went to the dealer. I have been working on vehicles for more than 20 years but most were older than I was so I am learning as I go just like using a code reader for the first time. I will do some more checking and try to figure some more things out. Thanks again for the help and thanks to 1954oldred too.

Yeah but for you it is to go to work rather than to have it worked on ( I just finished reading all 6 pages of the FICM testing procedure post).

 

Well I guess it is time for a update, long story short the FICM was toast.
Now the details, checked the batteries and the alternator and they were all within specs truck continued to have rough early morning starts but was hoping it was due to the 20 degree weather but Saturday it failed to start. Had it towed to the dealer and they said it was the FICM and the total for repair is $1211. I was planing to keep the old ficm and have it rebuilt if it happened again but there was a $100 core so I passed on the $100 paperweight. On a side note the first guy that showed up to tow it had a flat bed that was too small and he was new at it so when he went to level off the bed he forgot to put the truck in park and it rolled into the towtrucks upper light bar (Truck has a 8" lift and 37" tires) and smashed in the grill so now that is being replaced by the tow company. 2010 has been a great year for me so far...

Did you get the latest Ford Flash that is not the FICM killer while you are at it?

Ask.... and if you have the old killer flash.. RUN to get it flashed.


Sheesh.. I would have paid you $100 for your dead FICM.

 

Truck was in the shop about a year ago for 3 bad injectors and about 4 months back for a state inspection and a diagnostic which ended up being a bad glow plug control unit so they may have flashed it then and not said anything since they like to do that crap and not say anything. Will have to call in the morning to see what the last flashes were.

 

I called this morning and the truck was already done and the service writer was closing out the ticket as I called. He said that he could not tell when the last flash was but he said that they did it when the new FICM was put in so I should have the most current one now. I guess I will see when I pick it up tonight.

 

Well I just got it back. It seems to run fine but it seems louder but smoother and I can hear more of the turbo whine thru the air filter (it has a airaid intake). It may just be louder since it is properly hitting on all 8 cylinders once again and not limping along.
The corrective action listed was as follows: diesel dia, replace ficm module and reprogram fcim tcm and pcm modules. So with all of that I guess that means it got the latest flash.
