Bought a costumed out F150 ~ Big Block with a manual 4 speed NP435 tranny.

Super nice 4x4 if only I could get the clutch issues worked out.

What the person who I bought it from (who inherited it) told me is that the transmission was out.

Turned out to be a lock up shift top and damaged shift forks ~ missing the inserts.

I replaced the slave cylinder since it was external and he had receipts for a recent master cylinder replacement from a reputable Auto Repair Shop.

Still it's a monster to shift with the motor running (easy without motor running) will barely go into 2nd (I never use the first) when at a stand still. Grinds reverse every-time.

I can pump the clutch and give it longer than normally when the pedal is depressed with inconsistent results. When I bleed it out it seems to do better for a day or two then right back to the same thing.

Also, there is more clutch when the motor is not running. As soon as you start the truck the pedal is much softer, feels almost as one of the cylinders are gone.

What am I missing? Are the plates gone or nearly gone. There is no throw out bearing noise or clutch odors to indicate this.

 

Are you leaking fluid?

If not, you just have to bleed the master (off the truck - a hassle) and slave better or replace the slave cyl. Basically the procedures listed in the Explorer forum apply to any hydraulic clutch set up.

I didn't know NP435s came with a slave cyl.

If you have a NP435 then granny low and reverse are not synchronized and will clash if you have a misadjusted clutch, hydraulic or not.

If you have a NP435 there should be an inspection plate at the bottom of the bellhousing, wear safety glasses and look inside to see if the disc is worn.

 

I am starting to wonder if the shop he took it to matched the master with the OEM normally found on that year truck. It would of been orig a 302 with a manual T5 perhaps , not sure on that.

If they undersized the master by incorrectly putting a t5 master rather than a np435 master ~ could this explain what I'm seeing? Surely the two masters are not the same ~ or maybe they are?
