69cj did a nice step by step on how to remove it.

Thermostat Removal Option: (Thank you 69cj)
A) Pull air cleaner assembly.
B) Drain coolant.
C) Remove upper radiator hose.
D) Remove 2 nuts on t-stat housing.
E) Lift and move press sensor bracket to the side. Not a lot of play in it but it will move.
F) Remove 2 more nuts on t-stat housing.
G) Remove housing. It will lift right off of the studs.
H) Reverse procedure to re-install. Use a new O ring (5 bucks at dealer). I used Vaseline to hold the O ring in place.

Could be, did you check the coolant level? Low coolant can cause heater to run cold.

Mine was running hot today pulling many long hills. I think it might be sticking closed, gonna change it out in the part store parking lot as I'm on vacation. If they don't have it would it be possible to run without it until I can get one in a different town?

I am thinking about replacing my T-stat as well. I have about a 20 min commute in the morning to work 55/65 mph. My ECT's are holding at 178. That seems too low. I didn't really notice this back in the summer when its hot. I assume this due to the thermostat sticking. If i run it up to 75 mph and hold it there, ECTs run up to the upper 180s but not much more.

Also, I've noticed my fuel economy has dropped since I started noticing this....would that be a coincidence??...I assume not as the engine should be more efficinet once at operating temp.

Would yall recommend changing the t-stat for this one?

I've read seveal posts and these temps seem to be a little different for everyone. As for now and what i am basing my decision on is the ECTs should be 190-200 and EOT should be 200-210 under normal operating conditions without a load and should have a max of 15 degree difference between the two...anyone disagree with that.

Thanks

It's winter and every year about this time my mpg's go down. When the temperature does not get past 50*F during the day you cannot expect good mpg's.

I have the same problem you have, only get to 174/176. Everything I have read says it is the thermostat getting weak/opening early. I am just waiting for a day in the upper 40s to get a chance to change it! may be next spring. it was 16 this morning!!!
