Well guys, I was driving back from my shop in my 92 F-150 and the truck soulded like it was prosessing gravel. Well I think My Transfercase went. I got under the truck and it looks to be the place. I am going to remove the shift motor tomorrow and turn it by hand to see if it stops. Any one have any ideas? She has some milage, only 240,000+ on her.

pull the drain plug and drain the oil, look for chunks and glitter. good luck!

Ken, how did you manage that?

I cracked a transfer case on my old GMC pickup truck.

Can't blame the truck manufacturer, as the transfer cases are vendor supplied.

I think I did mine in by using 4x4 to launch from a traffic light on wet roads, and a dry patch got me.

Now that I have locking hubs, I can't pull that stunt again till the snow flies.

 

Do not know, I was dropping a 67 Mustang off at my shop and on the way home, the truck sounded like I was processing gravel. Now today, all is good..

check the front wheel bearings. often they will become worn/loose and allow the locking hub to partially engage making the nasty grinding noise you describe, and it will come and go.
