98 4.0 OD Light Flashing, Hard Shifting
Hello everyone,
I have a 98 4.0 4x4 ranger thats been having some weird tranny issues lately. The truck almost has 165k miles on it.
Sometimes the OD light begins to flash and the transmission jerks going into second gear, and when it downshifts from 3rd to second it jerks again. I read all the valve body threads and thought that could be the problem. The thing is when I shut the truck off and turn it back on the light stops flashing the the truck shifts perfectly.
This happened for the first time about 2 months ago and maybe twice more after that. Lately its been occurring every 2-3 days.

My '98 4X4 4.0 is doing the same thing except the CEL light comes on and after a while the O/D light starts to flash and the tranny goes into "Limp" mode. Turn off the engine and restart and the tranny operates normal for a few miles then starts all over again.
It shows a code of P1740 but I don't know if the code interpretation is the same for a diesel as it is for a gasser.
P1740 equates to: "TCC Inductive Signature Malfunction." Anyone know what that means?

Any code over 1000 should be vehicle specific. If you have a abs/vss in your diff it costs $20 15 minutes to replace you might as well do that first. I have a manual so I did not have the tranny issues but I know that they cause problems with the autos. I had speedometer and funny brake peddle issues. And an off an on abs light

That code means the computer has detected a problem with the OD solenoid. It does not tell you what it doesn't like, but i suspect the resistance is out of range, or the solenoid has shorted out. It could also be a bad connection or damaged wire. try not to drive it too much till this gets figured out, otherwise the problem could become more complicated and expensive.

Yeah so its happened a few times since my first post. The speedo and tach are completly fine when it happens.
It jerks a bit when it goes from first to second. I think im going to change the 1 gear solenoid if i can figure out which one it is and do the diy flush.
I still have no idea why restarting the car gets rid of the issue.
