My 2001 sport trac has ABS issues. When just coming to a stop, the brakes get soft. I have cleaned the wheel sensors, replaced the rotors and pads and it was better for about a week, now it happens every time when stopping slowly.

I am wondering of my hubs are bad. It has 130,000 miles on it.

Any thoughts?

the term "bad hubs" normally means the bearings are going out and making noise. --- the brake discs can be warped, but that usually makes a shudder or vibration when braking. soft or mushy brakes are normally air in the system, leaking master cylinder, or hoses that are sweling. hold constant pressure on the brake pedal and see if it goes down or stays in one position. if the cylinder is not leaking, normally it is air in the lines--- or the ABS controller may leak internally.

 

Turned out to be a dirty/bad wheel sensor. Here is the advice from the 48/60 forum that I followed:

I do these all the time at work. It is the abs coming on.One of the speed sensors is out of whack. Its reading one of the wheels is turning slower then the rest, which makes it think that wheel is locked up or skidding, so it turns the abs on to that wheel to back the brakes off to stop the skid.Which then gives you the abs noise and the pedal feel you are getting.It has always been one of the front sensor.Rust under the sensor is 90% of problem. The rust will cause the sensor to lift out of its mount and change the air cap at the tone ring.If its 2wd the sensor is mounted in knuckle and tone ring is on back of rotor.If its in the knuckle and they use salt on your roads good luck getting out.4wd the tone ring is on the axle. check the tone ring for cracks or mis alignment.Samething happens with tone ring on axle, salt gets under it and splits the ring.Sometimes you can drive it and when the abs comes on, let go of the wheel. it may pull one way.Which ever way it pulls is the good side.There is less braking on the side that the abs is being activated on.making it pull to the side with more braking.Hope this helps.

The sport trac pulled to the right when the pedal softened so I replaced the sensor on the left side and everything works like new.
