PCM location and removal.

Have a 1990 F250 460cid EFI with a bad pcm. where is it located and how would I remove it . truck is 130m miles form a dealer. I am thinking of replacing it my self with a used one. but need the information on the curent unit. to find a repacement. so it needs to be removed.
this truck only has 38 thou. miles. was gifted to me. last owner had duis and could not drive it. reason for low miles.

It's behind the drives side kick panel. To remove it first disconnect the battery and then get a 7/16" boxend wrench and unbolt the wiring harness from inside the engine bay. Then pull the plastic kick panel from inside the cab and remove the retainer clip keeping the EEC in the fender pocket. Remove it by lifting the rear slightly and wiggling it out of the pocket, the rubber gasket at the firewall will have a pretty good grip on the connector so it will take some persuasion to free. Apply some petrolium jelly to the outside of the connector on the replacement EEC to help ease it back in.

It is located in the drivers side kick panel (between the door and the firewall).

You have to unplug it under the hood very low on the fire wall (10 mm socket).

Then remover the kick panel and take it out from inside the cab.

Side note: I have always pulled the inner fender liner to pull the ECU from the engine compartment side. I never knew it could be pulled from the inside. Last I remember on my 2 previous '93 Lightnings it was impossible to pull from the inside. So much for having a keen memory!

We are talking about a 1990 here and if you look at the photo of the plug above you will see that it is impossible to be pulled out through the engine side. It can however be removed from inside the cab.

Yes on your 1993 Lightnings you have to remove it on the engine side and through the inner fender liner.

I fully understand the OP has a 1990. I'm just saying my '93 was pulled from the engine side. It always amazes me how Ford makes little changes along the way from year to year...

I have checked everything else. Ford Mech seems to think is pcm also. since engine will run is you spray starter fluid into the air intake. a used one is cheapest way for me to go. at this time. but I'm open to any sugesstions, and will check then all before pulling the pcm out

More than likely it is, I have never owned or worked on a 1987 model. Pull the panel off and look. If it is there it should be removed from inside the cab once you remove the connector.

What kind of tests can be performed without trying it in another truck? Mine wont run long enough to use a scanner and I don't know anyone with a truck.

You can run the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) tests which is followed by the Continuous Memory (CM) display.

What kind of issue(s) are you having?
