I just had the 360 on my 72 rebuilt this Feb....wondering how big of a trailer I can pull. I had to get a tandem axle uhaul for work last week....1800lb trailer and loaded with about 2200lbs of stuff. It did ok (was just around town) but was noticbly bothered. Its an F100, the MARTI report says the GVWR is 5000lbs. Did I overload it? Eventually I would like to get a RV to pull behind it, just dont wanna go too big. It has a C6 if it makes a difference (def gonna put a trans cooler on it)

 

hit my user name and when my profile comes up, scroll to the bottom of the page. There is a gallery photo of my truck connected to my trailer with a 88 4wd on it. My recall that combined weight was 10,520lb. My truck weighs aprox 3800lb.

My truck has an FE C6 with 3.00 gears. It handled the load fine. Your F100 should be close in weight and your load is much lighter.

You could need some tuning upgrades, but the truck should do the job. For continued towing I would add a cooler.

thanks john...good looking truck...i had an opportunity to buy a 66 1 ton flat bed with 48K miles and rebuilt 300cid 6. the guy had changed his mind on the price and i couldnt afford it...

maybe im misunderstanding the weight ratings..the GVWR of 5000lbs...is that not the max total weight of load + weight of truck? it didnt struggle with the weight completely, but even with the empty trailer i was doing good to hit 55 on the interstate. of course now that i think about it, i was heading west in oklahoma...bucking a good headwind...haha...

im def gonna install a trans cooler....the trans was rebuilt over 10 years ago, but only has 30K on it. since ive got the truck running again ive had the fluid/filter/seals replaced twice just to get i cleaned out so it should be in good shape. when they did the motor, they just kept the point/condenser set up...im thinking of switching it to electronic ignition as well.

 

Your truck needs tuning, something is bad off.

I pulled a 92 F150 on the same trailer from Charleston SC to Durham NC. I was so damn fed up the that washed out I-95 in SC and southern NC, that when I hit I-40 in Benson, I pulled it to Raleigh running 80-85 mph.

Something aint right with your setup.

ive been kinda wondering about it since i had it rebuilt....it doesnt seem to have the power it should. im not the kind of guy that would go around squalling tires, but i really dont think it would do that if i tried. i know it does have a chronic hesitation that gets better when i change the fuel filter....living in oil capital okalhoma ive been told from people in the industry that we have horrible gas, even buying the non-ethanol laced stuff. its getting 12-13 mpg on a normal basis, so that makes me think its in good shape.

it only has a 2bbl carb...would that be an issue?

 

Interesting comments, First off your gas tank might need cleaning. Something you want to do when the tank is near empty. We hardly ever have to change gas line filters. I have pulled them at about 10 years to find it not needing service.

If you have FE getting 12-13mpg be happy, you are doing better than most.

My truck wont spin the tires on pavement without brake checking, but will easily reach 100 mph.

I still think tuning is your issue.

The GVWR is not the actual weight of the truck: GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight RATING.

FoMoCo sez: The actual weight of the truck, driver, any passenger and cargo should not exceed the GVWR.

So...if the GVWR is 5,000 lbs, the truck weighs 4,000 lbs, the driver weighs 200 lbs, the amount of additional weight that can be safely carried is 800 lbs.

Changing the fuel filter...where is it located?

As original thru 1972: Threaded onto the fuel pump is a can, inside that...is a cartridge fuel filter.

Most ppl have no idea it's there, so it rarely gets changed. And since they don't know it's there, they install an in-line fuel filter.

thanks for the info...yeah the canister fuel filter is what i change...i used to have an inline as well, but the guy that rebuilt it said i didnt really need it. the gas tank is only 2 years old too...and the carb was rebuilt in feb as well. it seems to have no top end power. i know the kick down needs adjusted, it stays in third unless im down to 10-15mph and with help from my right foot. i guess i make it sound worse than it is...im happy with the way it runs 90% of the time...just ive noticed that even running empty if i have to pass someone on the interstate at 65 or so it just has nothing or next to nothing left to do it. i usually do my own oil changed, but i think ill take it back to the shop next week so he can check it out...i felt pretty good about this guy working on it because him and his partner are both in their late 40s early 50s and cut their teeth on 390s and 427s working on old mustangs when they first started.

does trailer payload have anything to do with GVWR? So if my truck is 4000lbs, im 200lbs, does that mean i can now only pull an 800lb trailer? I have always been confused on all that...newer fords have all that info in the owners manuals, but mine doesnt. i also have a handful of original sales brochures, but they dont mention it either.

 

and i am happy with the mpg....dad said that truck only got 15mpg one time ever since it was new. other than that it has always been under 12.

 

hogbus, If you will look at engine horsepower stats they all increase in power the faster they rev to a point then they drop off. At 65 mph you should have more power than at 45. What cam was used when it was rebuilt?

We would need more input to help you further. I would guess that you have a fairly low rear ratio like my truck does, there for you won't feel the punch as good with a higher ratio. I'm using terms backwards.

I can tell that my truck has more power @ 3800 rpms but it's also above 75 mph.

I don't pay any attention to GVWR, it is totally meaningless in real time. I have hauled 5500lbs in the bed of my truck, I have pulled 6500lbs+- with it. If you paid attention to that you couldn't haul anything. IMHO

thanks john, thats what i was thinking! who only hauls/pulls less than 800lbs? ill play with the kickdown adjustment some...im not gonna be pulling anything very often, ive been able to haul anything in the bed i wanted to. moved in it, hauled a rick of wood, whatever. i had the rear end rebuilt last year as well, its a 3.00. as far as i know, the 360 was rebuilt back to factory specs...
