Question 1966 F500 2 ton truck

Hello,

I'm looking for some information in regards to an older truck I have. Hopefully someone here could help.

It's a 1966 Ford 2ton grain truck with a dumping bed. It has a 6 cylinder (300 ?) engine a 4 speed transmission with a split rear end. Does anyone know what type of transmission was used in these trucks. There is a designation on the door of truck that is old and damaged but I believe if says the truck is a model F503 and the transmission is an AF8. Like I said though the tag is damaged and I could have wrong numbers in here. I have seen pictures of similar trucks online with the model listed as an F500.

I need to replace the reverse gear in the transmission but without knowing too much about the truck model and tranny model its difficult to start order parts.

Any help would be much appreciated.

240 or 300. Should be your gas engines. Look at the 4th letter in the vin and A means 240 a B means 300.

The trany should be a Borg Warner T-18.

Number dummy could help more I belive.

There should be an ID tag on the tranny itself, have you crawled under the truck to find it? Take a can of carb or brake cleaner along with a rag when you go.

The TRANS code is A / F8 is the AXLE code. There should be a blank space between the TRANS & AXLE codes, but in some cases, Ford assembly line workers did not always do this.

Like I said though the tag is damaged and I could have wrong numbers in here.
They look AOK to me.
Welcome to FTE

F503 = F500 2WD, 17,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

AF8 = A is the TRANS code / F8 is the AXLE code.

A = New Process 435 4 Speed Manual Transmission / NO Warner T-18's were installed in F500 or larger trucks, F100/250's only. And...F100/250's could also have the NP435.

F8 = Eaton Model 13802 Two Speed Rear Axle / 6.33-1/8.81-1 / 15,000 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.

New Process 435: The cap used to retain the shift lever into the shift tower has two notches on it. Two pins that protrude from the tower retain it.

This cap must be pressed down on, and held down while turning it to remove it. I would not be a bit surprised if it's damaged.

People do not know about this removal procedure, use pliers to get the cap off...which tears out the two notches.

The trans has to be in neutral to remove the cap (B8T7220D), which is available from Ford for less than 8 bucks.

I thought 68 was the first year for the NP435.
When exactly did ford start using it. It is a tough tranny Ive got one in my 85.
