i bought a used clutch for my bronco project it was out of a 6.9 diesel well when the guy pulled the engine he bent one of the fingers on the pressure plate, has anyone bent one of these back and run it? or should i just cut that one finger off? its a multi finger pressure plate not a 3 finger.. also some of the pressure plate bolts that hold it to the flywheel got messed up anyone know where to get replacements? they are special looking.

I wouldn't put that in, even IF you could bend it back without breaking it off. Get your money back and buy a new clutch.

 

Thats where you and me differ. this clutch was working fine before it was pulled.. im going to use it, now what do you think cut the finger off or bend it back?

But if you're going to do what you want anyway, then why bother asking for advice?

I wouldn't cut it off,because they release the clutch.(could affect release)

I wouldn't bend it for fear of it breaking later.
Also,if you bend it back,remember the release bearing has to contact the fingers to release the clutch.Could cause bearing issues.

So out of those two options; I would get another clutch.

If you must, bend it back.

Worst case: you'll get some noise and a failing throwout bearing and you will be doing the job again. This is an oil burner, right? Not like it's going to spin 8000 rpm and cut the truck in half if it lets go.

Medium case: your clutch will chatter.

Best case: you can post back with "neener neener neener, my clutch is fine after 100,000 miles even though you said it wouldn't be."

 

ya its for a offroad bronco im building, so its more of a toy, and i dont mind changing it out later or it making noise.

 

I am notorious for fixing things that are best thrown out and replaced with new, but in this case, I think the risk of having to re do the hard work of dropping the tranny and or replacing a clutch and throwout bearing is more than the cost of a rebuilt pressure plate.

It has been a LONG time since I bought a rebuilt pressure plate but they were not very expensive to a my teenage mind way back when.

If you insist on "fixing" the fingers, be sure it is exactly the same level and profile as all the rest. The throwout bearing has to ride on those fingers and one that is significantly higher or lower will probably cause extra wear on the bearing or catch on something and yank itself out.

Some things just should be replaced when failure is labor intensive.

 

i dont mind doing labor.. see the thing is if i cut it off it wont distort the pieces its attached to and wont cause the throwout to wear uneven.. but may disnenguage the clutch weird but im not sure.. then if i bend it might bent the other parts its attached to and cause weird clutch disenguagement.. maybe not though.. will be a interesting test for sure.. if i get a couple trips out of it i will be happy.

 

If you cut the finger off it will throwing the balance off and you will prematurely wear out the crank bearings.

 

Id take it to a clutch shop & replace the finger- probably cost $20

 

that is the most obserd thing i ever heard of! did they tell you that at autozone to sell you a new clutch? man hope u got some new muffler bearings too..

 

Ok smartass... take a look at the pressure plate and see where they welded balance weights to the outside of it. Now, use your head.... what do you think those are for? Keep using your head..... what do you think will happen if you remove a piece of metal from a balanced rotating assembly?

BTW, it's "absurd".

 

U shouldnt assume, it makes a you know what out of YOU and ME! i was just going to remove enough material to CLEAR THE THROWOUT BEARING!!!! this little bit of finger being so close to the centerline of rotation would hardly effect the balance..
