idi?

Hi I am not by any means new to ftef. I have always and will always run fords. I am strongly looking at competition pulling and dragging. I really like to keep things simple and was wondering if anyone has really built up 7.3 idi and if they are capable of high horse power or am I wipping a dead horse. Please any good feedback would be greatly appreciated.

doubt it. the problem with the idis and all of the powerstrokes before the 6.4L is the lack of ability to flow enough fuel for high hp engines. truthfully find a 2nd gen 12v cummins from a dodge. those p pumps can pump like limitless fuel. it is possible to build up an idi/powerstroke, but it costs a ton

I would do a 6.9 IDI, they have a stronger block.

alot of those 7.3L pullers have 5x as much money in their engines as the dodge guys do in their cummins. It's awesome to have a powerstroke puller, but it's damn pricey

Best thing you can do for an IDI is turbo it. You can get a moose pump and moose injectors i believe. Open up the exhaust and make or buy some kind of ram air intake, and youll be in good shape.

i have 3 idi moters i thought i would try somthing one moter is prept a littel i had sleeves instaled, rods shotpeend, new balanced pistons, lowered compression to 19.5 to 1, clened up intake and exhaust ports some ideas from gas hotroding hope they werent a waist have a cat v8 injection pump trying to find injecters that can handel the fuel, building exhaust mainifold for turbo, we opened up the cups and modified them a littel turned them 20deg so the fuel will move a littel more in the cilinder. still have the stock pump on it for now runs realy good with lower compresion i thought i would lose power but i runs much beter. will have to install head studs arp befor i turbo it.any ideas

No experience here sorry, but I have been tossing the idea around myself im looking for a 250 with a 6.9 to play around with but Im not to serious. Personally I really like the idea of a performance IDI just because of their simplicity reliability and the rarity.

Get on idi forum on here. And post similar. If your serious about this and have done that much all ready. U can push more fuel then these motors will handle with a modded DB2 pump. A stock size idi turbo is not gonna run it with that amount of fuel. Probally go to something like the first gen strokes had or larger. Lag wont be a huge issue if ur comp only.
Put a 4000 gov spring and hammer down. Studs are a must though.

Yes but he was running 100 # of boost too. The block split in 3.

I know of a guy in northern IL with a 6.9 in a 67 half ton that would run high 8's on the strip. Has so much work done it doesn't even look like a 6.9 anymore. But with alot of money it can be done.
