Truck stuck in 4x4

Truck appears stuck in 4x4. Moving the selector from 2WD to 4WD or 4WD Low the lights on the dash continue to say "4X4 Low". Have tried unlocking and locking the hubs to no avail. Have noticed that when I go in reverse and let off the gas the transmission seems to grab and stops the truck very quickly.

Currently i have the hubs locked (just to be safe) and 2WD selected. Engine runs fine but the ride is rough, harder turning then when not in 2WD, doesn't coast well when off the gas, etc.

Where do I start diagnosing?

Hi, first off, did you try to get out of 4x low in neutral. If so and you are stuck in low, I don't know how much driving I would do. I'm also assuming you have the 4x switch on the dash. If your 4x isn't dis-engaging, I would look at the solenoid on the transfer case first. If the hubs aren't dis-engaging you would have to look in the hubs to determine if they are rusted or filled with crap or you have a vacume leak. You might want to start with the solenoid.

I also once had the wire harness come loose on the transfer case solenoid. It looked like it was on all the way, but it just worked a little loose. Simple things first I always say

Info on ESOF Operation. I had a problem of not engaging 4WD Low. I cleaned up the spade connectors on the ESOG relays and in would then shift into 4WD Low. May be the same problem for not shifting out of 4WD Low.

For the morning I kept the hubs locked and the selector on 2WD. After running a few errands (stops and starts) the truck appears now to be back in 2WD. Man I hate gremlins. I'll check the wiring and also try the neutral trick if it happens again. I doubt it is the hubs as I had them completely replaced 2 years ago. I have an early '99 truck which has different hubs then most so I replaced them so I wouldn't get stuck on the road somewhere and no one could easily get parts.

By the way, where is the solenoid harness for the 4WD? I have the big manuals but just too lazy to dig them out.

It sounds like if you are in neutral with your foot on the brake, your problem lies in the transfer case as well as the hubs. I have never had an issue with the transfer case, but sometimes when my hubs want to stay locked, I take the chrome covers off the hubs and give them a few taps on the sides with a hammer, and jiggle the axle ujoint a bit. Sometimes that helps free the hubs up. But, it sounds like you need to make sure you are in neutral with foot on brake.

if the transfer case in in 2wd, it shouldn't matter if the hubs are locked or not
