Kerosene

Howdy, I was directed here with this query. Has anyone used Jet fuel, Jet A to be precise in an IDI 7.3 ? Jet A is basically kerosene and I heard you should either mix it with diesel or add motor oil (I am not sure what type) if it is used 100% - other than that I'm just looking for input. I can get the stuff pretty well free but don't want to cook some component.

It will run, but it has zero lubrication, you need a lubricative additive. If the fuel is free, you are saving enough to afford to use a good additive, I would double the dose each time. Where do you get this free, just out of curiosity, some kind of dumped fuel? If so, I would make sure to filter it good.

Thanks, not sure where I will get a lubricant additive (I live in a hic town and if you go into a shop and ask for something like that they look at you like you have a second head) but was hoping that the diesel 50/50 mix would be adequate - I was thinking maybe a mineral type of oil would be ok if I needed to add anything. The fuel I am getting is clean, probably more so than the stuff you can buy at the pumps.

Kerosene has a lot higher flash point than dinodiesel. I would not go above 20% Kero/80% diesel, and you should add some Bio or DK to the mix for lubrication.

Thanks for that, 80/20 sounds reasonable, I was not thinking of the higher flash point - I will give it a try and let folks know how it works.

Just another dumb question, would anyone know if you could use say a 100:1 mix of 2 cycle oil with the kerosene for extra lub?? I spose it would possibly screw up injectors or pump, if not what is the name of the lub additive and can it be purchased at most automotive dealers?

I myself would not use two stroke oil. Diesel Kleen is excellent and is available at most parts stores and truck stops.

Anyone wanting to use kerosene, or jet fuel for diesel need only add a few quarts of motor oil, or vegetable oil to give the kerosene the needed lubrication. Do experiment. If you find your engine over heating, then you need to add more oil. If you find your exhaust is dark and smoky then cut back on the oil.

You might wanna add a few quarts to 200 gallons, but add it to a tank and you will have problems.

I was running JP8 (jet fuel) with an ounce of two stroke per gal for 6 months and only quit doing so when I got transfered and lost the supply LOL. It ran just fine, and I saved about $2500 in fuel!
