Ok before I get flammed I did use the search feature and I did find what I was looking for, for the most part. How ever I still had a few questions.

What was used on the 56 fords cars? horse hair or metal shavings?

I am assuming its horse hair.

Second question is regardless if its horse hair or metal shavings when you go to clean it by soaking in kerosen do you submerge the whole air cleaner or just up to the top lid?

I seen someone talk about using transmission fluid inplace of motor oil that it would clean the "element" out and give you an idea of how dirty it is. Does that really work or would I just be better off soaking it in kerosen and flushing the "element" out?

Last but not least I saw a part about using marvel mystery oil. Now question is if I took 1 qt of regular non detergent (I was told to use non detergent so the dirt particles will settle to the bottom) 30 weight oil (owner manuals calls for use of S.A.E. 30 above 32* F) and premixed the correct amount of marvel mystery oil into the oil would that be a issue to use that?

I seen someone saying they use pure marvel mystery oil but I wouldnt want to do that but I wouldnt mind using it mixed in with the oil.

I also have one last question which I probably already know the answer to but I want to be sure.

Does the oil bath lids with the horse hair/metal shavings element ever go bad where you have to replace them from age? Or are they pretty much a life time filter that just clean every 2,000 miles or so and change the oil?

It really doesn't matter what you clean it in. All you're doing is rinsing out the "dirty" oil and debris.

Use kerosene, diesel, cleaning solvent, gasoline, mineral spirits etc. if you use gasoline, do it in the open NOT near any ignition source.

Marvel Mystery Oil is no "mystery". It's just solvent, light oil and 1% lard. There's really no benefit in using it as a washing solution (or for anything else really)....

And it's pretty bad in your fuel too....



......... I don't know why people think it's something special..... Probably the "Placebo" effect.....

I run the mystery oil in my fuel once every few fill ups but not that much probably 2 times a year and it does help keep the fuel system clean. I was just thinking maybe it would help keep the horse hairs or metal bits in the filter clean longer so it wouldnt be so much work to flush it out when it comes time to.

I am just concerned with the cleaning though cause i know it is basically washing the old oil and debris out of the filter housing. Only thing that has me really worried is if the horsehair/metal bits in the filter ever go bad cause I cant see through the mesh screen on the filter to see what it is or how it looks and I hate to try and track down another one.

 

I don't know why you think 74% mineral oil, 25% Stoddard solvent and 1% lard keeps the fuel system clean.....

It does lower octane and will foul plugs if in a high enough concentration.

If you use it in an engine that produces a lot of power for long periods of time it can cause serious damage due to detonation (as indicated in that NTSB report above)


It really doesn't matter what you use to clean an oil bath filter. All you need to do is rinse out the particulate matter that is trapped by the oil on the media with any suitable solvent, then re-oil with any mineral or motor oil.

You'll want the oil to be of sufficient viscosity so as to NOT drip off the media.......an oil that is at least 30wt or more should work.

well owners manual says to use S.A.E. 30 above 32*F or S.A.E. 20W below 32*F. I am going to run S.A.E. 30 since it hardly ever gets below 32*F down here.

As far as the MMO I think it works cause I have used the stuff once in a while (no more than 2 times a year) since ive had the car since Oct 2005. So far I have yet to replace the filter on the carb when i put it on new in 05, I have yet to replace the plugs at all (they still burn clean with a nice white greyish tint to the whole plug) the engine runs great and has 20" of vacuum at idle as well as getting 21 mpg city now after my swap from a flex fan to clutch fan. So in my book the limited useage of it is enough for me to belive that it is keeping the engine running right. Its the only additive I put in the fuel I dont even do the carb cleaner that they say to run. Mainly cause its diluted by the fuel and its not as good as alittle fuel with alot of the cleaner. In the end the most I put in is 4 oz at fill up and its 4 oz going to 10 - 20 gallons of gasoline. It says on the bottle 4 oz per 5 gallons. I just use 4 oz regardless so I am not doing like in that article where their running almost a 50/50 mixture of MMO and avaiation fuel.

But in the end I was just wondering if it would help in the oil for the oil bath filter. I dont think im going to run it though probably just use some plain old cheap 30 weight oil.

Only problem is I looked at the oil bath filter today and I dont see a fill line so I dont know where the fill line would be or how much should be in the unit. The only oil in it is just in the little trough and I dont know if you just fill that up or what.

This is the only photo I got of the base so its below so if anyone could show some insight to where to fill it cause I examined the cleaner today and didnt see no line or mark or groove or nothing.

That's good to know....I want to use a clutch fan on the 292 that I'm putting in my F-600.

What did you have to do to get the clutch fan mounted?

 

its not on a 292 its on a 351 but to mount a clutch fan on a 292 though you just need to get a clutch that has slots that lines up with the pulley. You would also have to get shorter bolts as well as getting the right diameter. I am thinking of going with a clutch fan on my 292 how ever I have to see but im thinking the non thermal clutch i used on my 351 should bolt to the 292 pulley.

The very least im going to do to my 292 though is try and see if the 57-58 ford fan shrould would bolt to a 56 since mine never had one. It will be more for safety than anything the car has rubber seals to the hood to help force air through the radiator than around it.
